Noob from florida with lots of questions

hi all name is sam but axl is what everyone calls me i love straight razor shaves and as of late wanted to not only learn how to but figure out what i need to be able to not only do it but to maintain the razor along with trying to figure out which razor should i start with way to many different sizes ect ect and then you got the sharpening tools and its a lot to take in for not even owning a razor yet i was looking at this product here and if i can get any advice that would be great Dovo Best Quality 5/8" Half Hollow Straight Razor Shaving Set for Beginners | RoyalShave

Hirlau has offered you some excellent advice to get started. Make use of the SRP Library. It will have answers to many of your questions. If you are still unclear about how to proceed with straight razor shaving, then just ask one of the members here in the appropriate forum. They will be more than willing to help you.

As for your razor purchase...Make certain that the razor that they are offering with that set is professionally honed, not just factory, sharpened. There are similar shaving kits offered by vendors who advertise here at SRP that are professionally honed, making them shave ready.

Sam,,,read some first before you pull the trigger on anything,,,take a few hours at least to read about new purchases in our library section,,,,don't simply buy on my approval of the equipment you asked about.
$200.00 plus dollars is a lot of money to toss without learning a little first.

ive been reading online and watching a lot of videos for 3 days i will continue to look before making the jump

so looking more into it im thinking of getting a dovo 5/8 and getting a dovo stainless steel no sharpen razor so when i practice i have the no sharpen and once i get that down and then go to the straight razor and when it needs sharpening go back to the no sharpen as i ship the other off then once i master all of this then worry about sharpening it myself ....the part im worried about the most is the strop im worried of messing up my blade and messing up the strop now i know everyone says u will mess it up but im scared ill never know if im doing it right ect ect ect

Welcome to the forum. Having 2 razors is a good plan so you can still shave while 1 is out for sharpening. One small point though unless I misunderstood you, a stainless steel razor still gets dull and needs to be honed/sharpened just the same as a regular carbon steel one.

Hi and welcome. Sounds like you've done a bit of research just remember that the shavette and the straight are different a both have their own learning curve. It wont be as easy as just switching from one to the other there will be a bit of learning in the middle. Good luck. Ed

Where do you live in Florida? There are quite a few members scattered around the state. I'm sure you can find someone in your area who would be willing to sit down with you and show you a variety of razors to help you in your selection process. There's a great advantage to having a hands-on experience rather than looking at pictures on a computer screen. Also, it's a lot of fun for members to get to talk about razors with someone who is interested.

having someone to come over and show me the ropes would be amazing not only for the help of a purchase but to help me learn the right way of doing things in person would be very helpful i live in saint cloud florida its near kissimmee (disney area) as a beginner i think a shavetee is a good starter yes i notice that its still different than a straight razor however it takes all the stress away from the learning of maintenance of a straight razor.....once i master that then ill buy a straight learn that and the maintenance of how to strop and hone however now i need a opinion on whats the closest to a straight razor i was comparing the Dovo and the parker and if i could get some people to share some insight on these as a lot of info i have read seem to contradict eachother some people say the parker some say dovo but i see its like coke and pepsi however i again want to do this for the basic learning purpose and then worry about a straight i read that its a different shave however if you master this than going to a straight is easier so i feel like its beneficial...if i could get someone to come over and teach me how to properly strop and hoan than before making a purchase maybe ill just jump to the strop and hoan.....that part of the razor for now is scaring me its hard enough that i got to learn to shave with it but i also need to learn to maintain it lots of work in front of me im hoping for plenty of replies on this so i can finally make a purchase and get practicing but im still taking my time on the first purchase
