So I decided... quite out of the blue that I want to learn how to straight shave! I think mostly I like nostalgic items and straight shaving has lasted for how many generations? It has to be good... that and another thought to my mind is the money that can be saved in the long run not having to buy disposaable cartridges and I cant stand electrics! Mostly right now just wondering where to start!? Where be the stickies?? :)

I'll put a few links down below. They are pretty good places to start. Other than that, poke around the various sections of the forum, and ask lots of questions!
As for saving money, it's entirely *possible* but there are many here (myself included) whose plans to save money fell afoul of the various "Acquisition Disorders" (RAD, HAD, SAD for razors, hones and soaps respectively). :) But get yourself good kit to start (razor, strop, brush, soap) and you theoretically could use them for many years and definitely save money.

Thank you! I fear my biggest hurdle will be purchasing my initial equipment, so many options and I am surprised how much the prices can vary!
Inital purchase can be hard. Do some research and use use the sites search engine and you will hopefully be able to get some info on what your looking at from people who have used them before. The site vendors have quality items and often some of the lowest prices. The razor will come shave ready from them if stated. If you update your profile to include your location we can offer better advice.

Oh wow! Thats awesome, been back in bentonville recently? it has changed a lot! I am sure I will have tons of questions, spent all last night just reading through the faqs. Just want to get started on it and ditch the plastic junk, seems like I get 3-4 shaves out of a head thats it :/
I haven't been "back home" in about 6 years. It had really changed then! As for straight razors, I love the nostalgia of it. I've looked at straights for years. Finally, my wife bought me a AOS brush/starter kit. That opened the flood gates. Fortunately, I found this site very early and didn't make any purchases that I regretted. Good luck and enjoy yourself.
As of others have already said, don't be shy to ask as many questions as you need. The straight razor vets here love to help bring in new straight razor shavers any time they can and there is a wealth of information to be had. Become friends with the search bar as a lot of the questions you have might have already been answered in depth.

Welcome from a fellow Arkansan. I'm from the Little Rock area though. I will say that straight razor designs and whipped dog have full starter kits with everything you'd need to get started for reasonable prices and they are known on here for good quality. Whipped dog sells used razors, meaning they may not be the prettiest thing to look at but they shave great. I know several people on here have his razors. I got mine from SRD and they include a free rehone certificate with it. I'm new to this as well so I doubt I'll be a wealth of info or help but there ya go.
Oh and if you want to grab some creams and a brush but don't want to wait some Dillard's carry some Art of Shaving stuff. AoS isn't very cheap but they will give you free samples of their scent free (which isn't but you gotta smell it to know what I mean) cream and preshave oil. Good luck!
