compeltly new, scared and excited to start

Hey everyone,

My dear friend Yves81 caught my attention with classic shaving, i used his DE razor a couple of times and was amazed by its results. By now i got all the gear and cant wait to start using the straight razor. I know by now that patience is a must so for now i only use the DE razor. Normally i used gilette crap, spend tons of money and got irritated (physically and mentally) daily. Now with the DE razor it became a ritual wich i enjoy a lot!
I got a dovo straight razor (stainless steel scales, 5/8), proraso pre shave and proraso green soap, badger brush and stainless bowl.

Although Yves81 has given me tons of tips and advice, any tips will be very welcome!

Ty, just decided i will use my SR tomorrow on my sideburns. to excited to wait longer after reading all this info on SRP.

Welcome to SRP. From what you say about trying it out on the side burns I'd guess you've read the beginner's guide here ? If not give it a looksee, especially Lynn Abrams on the first straight razor shave. Just take it slow, no pressure, use the same lathering and stretching techniques you've been using with the DE. A lot of it is transferable from the DE technique to the straight razor. :gl:

You and me are the the same boat, I am getting a straight razor. I started to use a DE about a year ago with soap mug and brush. I loved it. Let me know how it goes.

You'll be fine. Look at how many people have shaved this way over the centuries and survived (just don't look for information on those that didn't ;) ). It's all good. Just take it slow and easy as stated above.

Don't smoke the funny stuff, it will ruin your concentration and the fear you speak of might possibly be caused by a sense of paranoia which also can be closely attributed to ...sativa ;)

I spent a month with the razor before I got up the courage. Plan a nice quiet morning when you do not to go anywhere and take your time. I will warn you that once you can shave with the straight it becomes VERY addictive and you will wish you could shave more often.

That'll pass in time. It's just shaving after all, but it happens to be the best method of shaving I think.

Yesterday had my first shave with the SR, was planning on a small part of my sideburns just to get the feeling and get used to the razor but ended up shaving 1 complete cheeck. It didnt get as smooth as i would like but hey... No cuts, no razorburn. Immidiatly threw my gilette crap in the trash.

A hasty decision that you won't end up regretting in the long term, but may have some drawbacks in these early days ;).

I did the same as I picked up the blade (shavette for me) ditched the rest, do or die.

One of my better decisions.

Yes I took on the do or die approach too, but I remember how difficult it was even though I didn't throw away any of my old stuff (still have it all in the back of my wardrobe somewhere), I used a cut-throat exclusively until I got it right. This was after years of off and on trying to shave with a non shave ready razor, back in the pre-internet era, and with total ignorance of the how's, whys, and wherefores of operating a real razor due to having no father figure/mentor to show me how. Glad I got all that sorted now though. I became my own Mentor. They even gave me the badge to prove it ;).

Sativa- congrats on the first of many shaves with a straight! a measure or success on the first attempt goes a long way, I know first hand as well. my first shave was long before I became a member here, I had found my first straight in a box of tools I bought to restore. I cleaned it up and honed it, nervously did a pass down both cheeks and cleaned them up. didn't knick myself once. breathed a nervous sigh as I was about to try the neck and chin and my hands started shaking just a little. time to stop. well, I was bolstered by the moderate success of my first shave so second I dove right in and butchered my chin! my advice is stick with the north south passes, sideburn to jawline til you good control over the razor and are getting a close shave on the cheeks. the curves are a whole other experience to master (still learning). throwing out the junk will haten your learning, thats what I did as well and have never looked back. I shaved exclusively for half a year or more after that first one before I started throwing a de into the mix on travels. glad to have you here, don't be afraid to keep going back into the library and re-reading the beginning steps, new things will strike you all the time as you do so. :D

Hi and welcome. I also dove straight in doing all my shaves with a straight. My advice go slow and work bit by bit. Razor burn and the other discomforts aren't worth it to say you did it all at once. Good luck
