Hello from the Triangle (NC)

Greetings from Lizard Lick, C'1. It's a great forum.

I don't know much but almost a year down the road I'm honing my razors and getting wonderful, smooth, irritation free shaves. My neck is also prone to razor burn; that problem stopped when I quit using hot towels and started using likewarm/cold water for prep, lather and rinsing.

A big 7/8? Consensus? I recently hashed that topic out over here and learned a lot: http://straightrazorpalace.com/shavi...ts-appeal.html Feel free to try the large and powerful Kropp anytime. I think I am done with it, having decided 6/8 is my new idea of a big razor.

Hi and welcome. A better soap and cold water shaving might help with the sensitive skin. Don't think there is much difference between cs and ss in the long run. If you aren't having problems with the 5/8 just go with what you want. You can shave with any size it might just take a little adjustment to get used to. Good luck

Welcome to the madness!! Your at the right place ,, have you looked at our classifieds? You might find a razor in your budget and won't have to wait. And many of these guys will make sure it's truly shave ready. Good luck and as for the neck , time and a good sharp razor will eventually get you there irritation free. Tc

Welcome to SRP! Don't worry, RAD will have you shortly. LOL. ;) I'd say go for the 7/8 if the bigger sizes appeal to you. Otherwise, the 6/8 is smack in the middle of the sizing chart. I wouldn't worry too much about CS vs SS and just get the razor that appeals most to you.

Yeah, I figured the 7/8's Cons would be the heft and physical size for a new shaver. Then again, my hands aren't small. Since I shave every other day, I was thinking that maybe the extra heft could be turned into a Pro in that it might slice through the rough stuff a little more easily and smoothly. Again, being new at this and only having one razor means that pretty much everything I do or change at this point will be a calculated risk.

Maybe I'll go for the Dovo Renaissance 6/8 first and then re-assess after six months of using that. I'm certainly not intimidated by the 7/8, just want to make a good next decision in this learning process... or at least a decision that won't feel like I shot my foot off. :)

I Googled some Kropp 7/8 and they look nice. I'd live to try one out some time. Do you still have yours or have you moved it out already? If you're moving it, PM me with particulars.

Thanks for the tips. I can definitely see a RAD issue in my immediate future. Between SRs, guns, cigars, & my bourbon I'm quickly going broke. But hey, you can't take it with you so you might as well enjoy it while you're here. :)

I've got a crazy swirly hair pattern on my neck as well. You just have to keep trying different angles and skin stretches until you find out what works best for you. I'm still creeping up on mine and every day I get a few more hairs cut a little closer. One thing that I have done that seems to be helping me is to coat the area in preshave oil and use cold water to shave the area. That way I can see what I'm doing without the lather getting in the way. And make sure your tip is stropped well.

If you havent already, look up the guilotine stroke for your neck, that and good stretching, you can pull the awkward bits of skin either pull it up on to your cheek, or sideways further around your neck.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I'll be looking for that guillotine stroke info, as well as playing around with water temp a bit during pre-shave.

Being the impatient guy that I am I went ahead and ordered the Dovo Renaissance 6/8 last night, and according to SRD email updates, it's already on its way to me, along with some EJ Pomegranate & Lime soap and a couple leather pouches. Looking forward trying some new things and techniques out.

Welcome to SRP from Rockingham NC! You will find plenty of helpful advice here and guys will go out of their way to help you any way that they can. I am pretty new to straight razors myself after using a DE for a while then made the switch. Like someone has already mentioned you will get RAD pretty quick. I have purchased three very nice razors in the past four months all from SRD and have been very happy with all of them. I have also ended up with quite a collection of soaps, creams, aftershaves, etc. to go along with them. The Dovo 6/8 you ordered last night will arrive in just a matter of days. My experience with SRD has been excellent and I have always gotten my order in a very short period of time after placing it. If you get your stropping technique down you will not have a problem keeping those razors shave ready for a while. My poor stropping is what dulled up my first razor but I have gotten much better ever since and had no issues. I know there is a group in the triangle area that gets together from time to time and some of them I believe have replied to your post already. I have not reached out to any of them as of yet to see about meeting up one Saturday but it is something I would really like to do and you should as well. Us newbees can learn a lot from guys who have been doing this a while and I certainly want some instructions on honing as my next step is to purchase stones so I will have the ability to hone myself instead of sending my razors off to be done. Welcome to SRP it sounds like you're in the right place. I'm new here too, 15 shaves in on str8s and the above advice is very sound as is all I've received also. As for blade size I went with 6/8 and 7/8 and find I like them both, you mentioned the Ralf Aust I have one in 7/8 and I really like the way it shaves. I also wear a stash and goatee and the big blades are not a problem for me so don't hesitate. The mistakes I made when first getting started-poor stopping dulled my first blade- not learning the proper pre-shave routine- not getting my lather wet enough- not stretching my skin enough. I had to focus my improvement in all these areas and then I started getting some really good shaves. If you can reach out to a mentor and get some one on one or go to a meet, the people here are great. I went to a meet one week in and the help was awesome, have had very good shaves ever since. I'll be meeting with a mentor in my area next week to work on trouble spots and honing. Good luck on this crazy journey and start a shave journal hear and ask lots of questions. Great shaving FrankC
