Noob from England

Hello

this is the first time I have visited this site before and I'm very excited to join the community.
Im part to another wet shaving forum but I have just picked up my first straight razor from an antique store. I haven't used it yet as it needs a clean and a hone but I am very eager to get started with it.
For a year and a half I have been using a safety razor and I have learnt a lot about shaving 'properly' previous to this I barely shaved as my skin would be extremely sore.
For the past few months I have been wanting to dive into the world of straight shaving but I have just been a little tight cash wise to get started but finally I have got myself a razor.

Hello and welcome from the States. As to the skin problem. It could be you are using too much pressure on the razor and not enough skin stretching for one, and possibly, too dry of a lather. Read all the wikis here on SRP that you can and ask us a lot of questions. We love to answer.

Hi,
Thanks for the tips but my skins fine when I shave now, I had a problem before I started with a DE, the cartridges and canned foam was the problem. Now I get great shaves and want to start with a straight.
Im from up north, just on the outskirts of Manchester.

Unfortunately no. He is a long distance friend thanks to SRP. This forum creates many friendship between very diverse people without them ever physically seeing each other. I not run into any other organization like this one. And add to that that it is also the most open, civil and gentlemanly forum around. I write back and forth with people from almost everywhere in the world. Wait, Aussie Ed will chime in here very soon (as soon as he sees this).

I do hope that I win the lottery someday soon. Then I will be able to visit my far flung friends.

Hello smegzilla, razorfeld was right i have chimed in (its a bit embarassing when someone doesnt when you say they will), though richard calls me aussie ed, i am actually a pom, with australian citizenship.
I used to live in wigan, cirencester and london at various times. Welcome to the foum, have you posted any piccies of your razor, people always like piccies. Anyway i should probably read through the thread properly before i make an arse of myself :)

Do you have someone to sort your razor out? I believe jamie (celtic crusader) does that sort of thing, he is im wales - myrther tydfil i think, but i presume they havent closed the royal mail yet so you should be good.

Yes I would like it honed so its good to use, I will have a go myself in the future but for now I will leave it to a pro.

I'd just like to give you all an update. Upon recommendation from you guys I sent my razor off to celticcrusader to get honed. It arrived back today looks lovely. I must add he cleaned up the razor for me too as well as honing. Im very excited to try it out but as I shaved this morning I will have to try tomorrow.

looks nice, i would wait until the evening to shave, you will want plenty of time, allow an hour, you will get some change but dont expect it to be fast, dont forget that you will need time to make and apply your lather, and clean both yourself and razor up at the end, strop etc.
you will get quicker, but going slow until you get through the initial learning, beyond complacent to competent is worth while taking your time.
