Recieved a Merkur 23c (180) for Christmas with a "Art of Shaving" Starter kit. I also had a buddy enlighten me on the straight razor side of things and now I'm hooked. I have a Filly strop that should arrive this week as well as a few different SR blades that I'm having honed. I picked them up at flea markets to try and see if after I learn one works better for me than another. Also, my brother is getting into it at the same time and one of the razors that's getting cleaned up is our Great-Grandfather's old razor. Kind of a neat family heirloom, that until recently, would have probably stayed inside of a box for another 50 years.

Excited to nick up my face and get into things this week.

Scrandy, welcome to SRP. I'm sure between your brother and you a sharing plan could be worked out on your Grandfather's razor. Please remember to take it slow and easy, investigating everything before moving on to the next challenge in wet shaving. Get lather building, face mapping, stropping and simple edge maintenance down before thinking of honing your own razors. Read all the wiki's and if in doubt, ask, ask, ask. We are all more than willing to answer questions.

Welcome! It's nice that you have a family heirloom as you're getting interested in the hobby. Enjoy the ride!

If your brother lives near you, I would strongly suggest that both of you get in the car and take Obie up on his offer. Though you should be prepared for other acquisition disorders once you see some of his kit (Obie has really nice stuff), you probably won't find a nicer and more helpful gentleman anywhere. You certainly would not regret the three hour drive to hang out with him for a while. Good luck with the learning process; don't hesitate to ask questions along the way.
