Well as the title says, i'm pretty new to this world and always like to do my research on anything i take on in my life! i've been interested in this style of shaving 1) because i've always been interested in it since seeing it in old westerns and 2) it's a whole lot cheaper! HAHA!

Not necessarily cheaper as many then start honing their own razors which means buying a honing stone or two or three. Some of us may purchase many other razors, just cause! Soaps, Aftershaves, brushes etc. It can get pretty expensive if you let it! LOL. I see that you understand. Lots of information in the "Library" and people to answer your questions. Yea, the whole "straight razor shaving is cheaper" is pretty much nonsense. It's an addiction and it gets expensive. I could have spent $50 on a DE razor and 100 blades and been done for a year. But it makes what used to be a daily chore into a daily interest. And having tried a lot of different shaving methods, there's nothing compared to the straight for closeness of the shave.

Welcome. If you want a "cheap" shave, grow a beard. This is not the place that you think it is. People here will tell you about another SR, hone, stone, strop or soaps and soon you will be checking them out and find yourself going to antique shops, junk stores, estate sales and even eBay trying to find something even more unusual, and before you know it any savings you may have had is gone. Any friends you may have had will be alienated by you trying to foist SR shaving on them as your passion for it grows and pretty soon you will be found by a loved one sitting in the middle of your "shaving den" clutching your favorite razor sniffing shaving soap and rocking back and forth babbling incoherently.

Yup that's the line we all use on our other half's to justify the initial outlay :beer1: Then the bathroom gets filled with an ever increasing array of soaps, creams, moisturizers (something i never ever used before straight shaving and now use daily lol) etc etc ........not to mention them razors that multiply on their own, "honestly baby they have their own kids i didnt buy em" :DQuote:

Welcome to SRP. Like everyone else has said use this as a resourse and there are plenty of guys out there that can answer any question you may have. I myself have only been using a straight since January of this year and the information on this sight as well as the knowledge of its members has been a tremendous help. I will agree with what some have already hinted to, it could be cheaper, but like most of us you will end up wanting more razors along with brushes, soaps, aftershaves, etc. I enjoy shaving now and did not before so for me it is a relaxing experience that I look forward to daily so that is how I justify it. My wife does not really appreciate that justification since I have bought four straights in seven months though :D

welcome. Many start because of the illusion of it being cheaper and then get hooked on the collecting aspect, then it's not. The cheapest way to go was already stated, two razor (purchased pro honed and shave ready) a quality barbers hone, CrOx on a strop, and the standard brush soap and strop. It can be done and it is not farfetched. If you can do it that will be awesome, I imagine many do, just not the ones that hang out here for years. There is the library section that has a ton of information, and the search function that will lead you to what has already been talked about, and ask away, there are knowledgeable people here that love to share.

Welcome. Yes cheaper. I have four years worth of aftershaves and soaps. It was cheaper for about five minutes. Now I have to try something new so often I don't have favorites because I cannot get them back in rotation. :)

I am in the same boat. My shave cabinet takes up more room than my wifes makeup drawer these days and yet I still keep buying different soaps and aftershaves to try. It does not take long to get addicted and also develop RAD!

Everything has pretty much been covered, so I'll just say Welcome to the Forum! :)
I lived in Palmer for 14 years and retired in 97 and moved back to Okla to help care for my parents. I miss Alaska, but not the dark or the snow. I told them I was going down to the lower 48 and was going to put a snow shovel over my shoulder and start walking south. When someone ask me what that was on my shoulder, that's where I was going to live!

Patience is the KEY WORD here! I can't stress enough that if you can't be patient then you will fail and none of us here want to see that happen. Take your time! I can't imagine you entering the Boston Marathon if you hadn't learned to crawl yet. That might be an extreme example but I see newbies do just that! They get a professionally honed razor and don't get a good shave, so instead of trying to learn that it was probably the shaving angle or that they had inadvertently turned the edge with improper stropping--they go out and spend a couple of hundred on hones and then they get worse shaves. :gaah: And they blame it on the razor! :banghead:
Take your time and you will be fine.
You will note that there are many 'ADS' in this world of shaving and not in the 'Advertising way' but RAD 'Razor Acquisition Disorder--SAD 'Strop Acquisition Disorder--HAD 'Hone Acquisition Disorder etc.
If you can keep those under control in the long run this age old art is very economical. Most of my razors were gifts, I have a simple honing set up, I have a couple of strops but I've managed to keep the ADS at bay.
