Welcome! Go through the beginner section and read everything there. It is a wealth of info, as do most mentors and other senior folks here.
Welcome... read, read and read some more. .. and watch vids too
Ty for the welcome. I've watched a lot of Lynn's vids, he makes it look so easy lol. A little at a time seems to be the way.. I'm sure this forum will prove to be a valuable source. When you use cream should you lather it in a bowl?
You can if you like, but if you don't have an appropriate bowl you can also lather in your hand or simply face lather. They all work, and it's just down to personal preference. I usually lather in a scuttle (think of a double-wall bowl with hot water between layers to keep the lather warm) but also quite often will face lather either for a change or if I'm in a bit of a rush.
And any bowl/mug/container will work. You don't need anything fancy. You may *want* something fancy, but you don't need it. :)
Cangooner is spot on, what you will find is that everyone has their ways of doing things, there are a lot of common themes but you really have to do a bit of experimenting for yourself to see what works for you. I would recommend reading the library and beginners sections, you will see a lot of essentially the same threads there this should give you some idea of the common issues and how they can be dealt with. Of course feel free to ask your own questions too, i found it easiest to seek general advice from the forum, but pick one or two members and distill the information with them via PM, otherwise you can end up going in circles. I think I have always had helpful responses to PM's from all of the members here.
Welcome to SRP. Lots of good folks here so please ask all the questions you have. That being said, there are a lot of great videos and articles out there. I highly recommend perusing Straight Razor Place Library - Straight Razor Place Library.
Best of luck and let us know how it's progressing.
Ty, tonight went much better. I only did a jaw and that gave me some confidence. I didnt have the pulling like the first time. I lathered on the face and that seemed to work really well. I ordered a strop, quick question how many shaves can I go before the strop is an absolute necessity?
Welcome to SRP
Most will recommend stropping before every shave. I do before and after
Hi and welcome. Stropping is just as important as your face prep and you want to be doing it every shave to keep your blade at it's best. Follow the advice given go slow and you will be fine. Good luck
Welcome to,SRP Maduro,
You will soon know if not already, it is a definite recommendation to strop before shaving but if you don't have a strop yet, if you have a light beard you may get a couple in ok, but if a heavy beard a lot less, in the interim until a strop is purchased you can apparently just strop on a folded newspaper, some denim jeans, etc and if real keen your palm is also used but not recommended
Check the stopping threads I am sure there is more there also just to keep the edge aligned and smoothed out happy shaving take your time and enjoy the benefits
Well if you dont strop then your edge is going to drop off pretty quickly, and be hard to get back with a strop only. But yes you can strop on newspaper in a pinch. Palm stropping works too, but you want to be pretty careful, but on the upside if you do nick your strop it will self heal (eventually)
Welcome to SRP and wetshaving.
I'm gonna hold off until the strop arrives before my next shave. I've shaved three times thus far. Another quick question? What's the best cream and the best place to find them. Right now I'm using Eshave products....
Thx again
Best cream.....
That is going to get you a lot of answers all of which will be user opinion
Castle Forbes. Trufitt and Hill - both excellent
Taylor of Bond Street CO Bigelow cheaper but nice.
There are many good ones out there, and it is of course a completely subjective question, but for what it's worth, my favourites are :
Body Shop Maca Root (widely available, decent price, takes some time to really whip it up but will give great lather)
Edwin Jagger (Sea Buckthorn is brilliant but is discontinued, Aloe Very also very good)
Castle Forbes (lavender is terrific)
Something nobody has mentioned yet about stropping. If it is a hanging strop, keep it taut, not tight. Make sure that you are leading with the spine and rolling it on it's spine when you change directions. And above all, a very light touch - I describe it as a feather light touch. Otherwise you are degrading edge and you go. One last thing. Warm the strop up before use by rubbing it with the palm of your hand till it feels warmish. That is all the treatment your strop should need.
Hello, and welcome to the fold!!
