Aloha from Saudi!

Hi all,
Beaming in from Saudi Arabia, expat living there for quite a few years. Been lurking around the forum for quite some time getting myself ready for the jump..
Well.. to cut the story short on how I reached SRP and shaving with a straight blade.. All started a while back with the return to Vinyl and DIY tube amps, and for some reason found myself in a forum talking about DE, started with Wet shaving two months back, then found myself at SRP!.

All I can say is, after a month of reading, getting to know the SRP environment, its members and participants, I couldn't have imagined such a lovely community.

1. The members are beyond awesome, their input, humour and willingness to help I honestly cannot describe!
2. The wealth of information... its just a gold mine!
3. Owners of businesses that I have had the pleasure already to contact and receive great products from (i would love to start reviewing on this site) such as SRD (Lynn and Don, whom i received from my first official Straight razor and strop.. amazing people), to Mama Bear (Sue can't thank you enough for the lovely products) and recently Scott from Portland razor co (high respect for your startup). All to which i have utmost respect as business owners who take the time and effort to communicate directly with the customer, let alone their high quality products and craftsmanship.

Honestly, I have high regards to this community and am sure that I am going to enjoy being part of it.

You will want to buy you a nice straight razor to begin with whether used or new. Beware of used ones not that they are bad but know what to look for like a lot of hone wear on the spine & edge or chips in the blade. Stay away from razors with rust on the cutting edge as that will only result in it chipping more metal off as it is honed. Here is also a list of straights to stay away from:

If buying a new razor, I suggest you buy one from Straight Razor Designs - Gifts for Men | Straight Razors or SRD. The owner & founder of this forum is Lynn & he is also part owner of SRD. When you buy a straight razor from him, he will personally hone that razor before you get it plus you will get a certificate for another free honing for when that razor needs it which should be a few months. There will be vendors who will sell you a straight razor that is supposed to be shave ready but really won't be. You will most importantly need to know how to strop & you can learn in the Library or here:

You will need to strop your razor before & after you shave. If you buy one from Lynn, chances are you won’t have to strop it before you use it the first time.
You will also need a shaving brush, a shaving mug & some shaving soap. Later it will also do you good to get a second straight razor so that when you send the first one out to be honed, you will have a backup to shave with.

Shnutz, I'm in the same boat as far as lurker and amazed at the wealth of information. You are one step ahead with having started using a straight razor. I cant wait to give it a go!! I'm amazed at the amount if interest in straight razor use around the world.

Likewise!!. reminds me so much of the onset of the comeback of Vinyl.. and trust me if it weren't for SRP i'd be at the ER stitching up me face.. go for it.. and one major advice (well from what I am sure you've already read, yet have to emphasise) dollar razor DONT, and do not skip under any circumstance Lynn's vid on how to shave with a straight razor.. yes there are many others, but for some reason once i went through lynn's vid, many times as there is so much detail, that my next shave went without any nicks or cuts.. its that good.

What part of the Kingdom are you in? I have fond memories of Jeddah in the early 80s.

addiction.. I can not agree more with respect to the 1 shave.. its ridiculous.. 1 day i can not tolerate shaving.. the next am browsing soaps and blades and wondering what happens if i shave a few times a day :)..

Yes siree, indeed it is.. was going for the olive .. yet turned out SRD was out of stock, and Don recommended the Bocote.. I can't thank him enough for doing so..

Well am in Jeddah... 80's the golden age.. a few more roads and buildings... everything else.. the same ;). I presume you stayed at a compound during your stay.. recall its name?

We lived in Saudia City.
I really miss going to the beach every Friday, going to the souk downtown, and the shwarma.

Saudi City.. still there.. yet nothing like the 80's... kinda rundown and neglected compared to other compounds ... such a shame..
Lots of people who lived there had fond memories.. shwarma.. a must :).. and the beach.. well its the Red Sea.. what can I say..

Yeah, the Red Sea is beautiful. I got scuba certified the month before we moved back to the U.S. and haven't been diving since.
