Welcome aboard, it’s good to see another local.
I’m also in the mid thirties my only youngin is almost 5 months old, so it will be a while before I need to teach him to shave.
The Norton set will serve you well, as my set has served me.
As for light pressure, it’s hard to quantify but when I was staring out and thinking that I was applying the lightest pressure, I would always find that improving my muscle memory would allow for even lighter pressure.
I still have to occasionally remind myself that applying “weight of the blade” pressure requires holding the scales up to balance them.
I try to visualise using a very slight lifting force at the lowest pressure stages.
Regards,
Neal.
Hi Richard and welcome aboard. You'll have fun and learn a lot - I guarantee it ! Feel free to ask any questions you like on this forum, we're all friendly here and a lot of the guys have a huge amount of experience. Of course, we're all still learning and that's part of the fun.
regards
Mike
G'Day Richard and welcome.
As far as honing goes, watch ALL of gssixguns honing videos on YouTube - you'll learn something new in each one

Welcome to the 'Place'.
Only figure I ever measured was how hard I pull on the strop with my left hand. 500gms or so.
Where & how you apply 'light' pressure is equally important. It's as hard as teaching someone to throw a rock or shoot a bow rather than building an engine. It's not so much a blueprint as a feeling.
Muscle memory only clicks after a lot of mistakes & a bunch of correct actions.
Hello the all the SRP members. This is my first post prior to jumping aboard the straight razor train and while there are some nerves, I am very much looking forward to the ride. Are there any Croweaters out there (you'll know who I mean) who can recommend a barber in Adelaide who still uses a straight razor as opposed to a shavette? I would like to see just how good the real thing is as opposed to my current regimen. In the meantime I shall be researching for that magical first blade.
Batou.
Welcome to the Forum, I am new myself.
I like the idea of gauging the pressure by honing on a set of electronic scales. Thanks for mentioning that.
