Dovo model # 98

New Member. I ordered A couple of day's ago a new Dovo Model # 98 from Royal Shave. com, after a couple of weeks of heavy research on straight razors. In been using a DE Razor for just over a year and have enjoyed it. I always new I was going to move to a straight eventually. I am looking forward to getting my new Dovo razor that should be delivered today. I may have over spent for my first razor though, at $ 275. I look forward to getting to know you all and Hope for patience with my future silly questions

Royal shave has good prices but I am not sure straights are shipped shave ready.

If your shave does not go well your razor may need a touch up

They are said to be shave ready... I guess we'll see. I have orderd a strope of course and I have also ordered honing supplies. The big question though is wheather the razor is ready or not. AM I READY.... A little nervous.

Well if its not shave ready someone here can always help out with that.

First thing to remember with a straight is that you will cut yourself. SO that being said don't trouble yourself with worrying about accidentally slicing yourself. The less you worry about it the less it will happen. Now I am not saying be careless and wave your straight all willy nilly. I am saying don't overthink it, trying so hard to not cut yourself. What I suggest is that you have the razor already in motion before it contacts your skin and gently touch down and don't stop the motion of the blade until the razor is off your skin. Kinda like an airplane doing a touch and go only the airplane is a razor and the landing strip is your face.

Basically its not rocket science, its shaving, and millions of people have been doing it for hundreds of years. Also make sure you have a good strop. You use a strop as often as the straight razor so if you know theres a big difference between a quality razor like a dovo and a low quality razor like a Gold Dollar or the worse ones out there then know that there is a difference between a quality strop and a cheapo strop of ebay.

Thanks for the advice. I did buy 30 degree 3" two peice red latigo from royal shave. Is that considered a good on?

30 Degree? could you possibly mean inch or dollar or????

Hi and welcome. Dovo class thier razors as shave ready from the factory. They are sold by some outlets as such but unless it has be hand honed after the factory it is doubtful it will be shave ready. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask

There are many folks with videos on straight razor shaving. to get started just type in Lynn Abrams straight razor shaving youtube and that'll get you there. not only will it show him but others I can't remember. Someone else has already said that the factory ships the razors supposedly shave ready but for me I would make sure and ask the folks you bought it from if they had it pro honed before it shipped. That will make a world of difference. If not the classifieds here will give many names of good hone masters. Welcome again.

Thanks for the info. Have watched several videos including Lynn Abrams. Still a little apprehensive though.... Guess I have to jump in with both feet at some point.

For me it was easier then some I went from de to shavette to SR .... so eventually yes both feet have to hit the water ...he does a great tutorial about 30 minutes long covers correct angles really well

There is a wealth of knowledge here, so see yourself around, and don't be afraid to occasionally ask for directions.:)

Just remember we've all been there. Take it slow like the videos show. Step by step. you think you'll never get there but you will. pay close attention to the angles they show and it'll make a great difference. The wrong angle can cause razor burn or weepers. If possible get you septic stick. I think I used up or wasted a couple. they burn but work. Have fun and enjoy and don't hesitate to ask these folks here. they've been there done that and bought the T shirt. they don't mind sharing there knowledge. good bunch of guys.

Just a quick tip, make sure and shave with it as it arrives. Don't try stropping it before your first shave. A lot of people (me included) have made the mistake of stropping it first, rolling the edge, getting a bad shave and thinking it didn't come shave ready.

Thanks for the adice, it came a little late though:) I stropped it before I shaved with it a couple of days ago, when I got it. It was my first strop experience and I'm sure I did a poor job of it.
