Hi Johnny & welcome to SRP! You'll find a wealth of information on here so just click on the tabs at the top of the page, especially Library. That is where you will find everything you need to know about straight razor's. If you click "Forum" you will see many tabs on the left to select from. Also if you click on the large SRP logo at the top left, it will direct you to the main page here where you will see a few selections on the left including the straight razor database plus down lower center, you will see this months beginners tips. Here's a link to Lynn's Youtube video's:

You might want to send your straight out to be professionally honed. You must also have a strop if you don't have one & must know how to use it which you will find in the Library & in Lynn's video's also. You need a good shaving brush with boar or badger hair , some soap & a mug or scuttle. Soon you might also consider buying a second straight for when you send yours out to be honed. If you have the money, I would suggest this new Ralf Aust & strop kit from SRD or Straight Razor Designs. Lynn, who is also part owner of them will hone & strop each razor they sell before it goes to it's new home plus you will get a free honing for when it needs it in 2-3 months if stropped right. You can practice stropping with an old wide leather belt & a butter knife so that you don't cut a new strop by accidentally going the wrong way which many of us have done when we first started out. Here's a link to the straight razr if you're interested. It's a good, affordable straight. They don't sell any junk:

If you have any questions, just ask on the forum or feel free to ask me in a personal message (pm).
Good luck my friend, great to have you here!
Welcome. There are a lot of friendly knowledgable people here. Tons of information in the library and archives. If you need a hand there is always someone around.
Hey there, Johnny. Welcome to Straight Razor Place!
Welcome to SRP!
Rust?
Got your Tetanus shot current?
It's kinda like riding a bike except you don't have to wear a helmet and spandex now. Welcome to SRP neighbor.
Hey guys thanks for the welcome I got to say you guys gave me one of the best open armed welcomings I have ever experienced and I feel very at home wow thanks ya I am kinda on my own out here I live in lodi California near Stockton about 45 min from Sacramento and I dont know anyone else who uses straight razors to shave so it feels good to be talking to guys with similar interests and who I can go to if I have any problems or questions and believe me I have plenty lol
Well if you haven't stumble on the library there is some great reading in there. You don't have to wait long for answers around here but the library says it all :<0)
Ya definitely Ive been using that alot and it helps Ive been registered to this sight for a few months now but Ive been to timid to introduce myself the welcoming has been great I should have done it along time ago but yes the library has been quite helpful specially for the questions I have about honing I suck lol I can sharpen a knife but a straight razor is a whole new world but I think I can get the hang of it quick question for anybody who wants to answer I have a D. Peres 202 razor that needs a new scale and honing and some restoring due to the tarnishing and lil rust but I wanna keep the etching anybody that you guys can recommended that's not going to charge over a hundred am just looking for a pearl scale to be added I know its alot to ask for but I am working with a budget thats not going to get me in trouble with my girl lol
The classifieds has a list of members that do restores. Send some PM's to them and post some pics so they can all see what they are up against. You might also check members section for somebody near you. You may be surprised. Help with honing is best with hands on help and watching vids is 2nd best. I learned watching Gssixgun's vids and my local friends helped me refine my skills and introduced me to different hones. You can always count on your friends to help you get RAD, HAD, SAD, and other wallet sucking addictions :<0)
Welcome aboard SRP
Welcome to SRP, Johnny
Here you will find many interesting things. Welcome to SRP.
Hi and welcome. There are a fair few guys in California so you might be able to find someone local to help you with honing and you never know maybe even with the scales. Another way is to buy a razor soley for the scales (blade can be broken ) and just put your blade in the new scales. If going for a damaged blade you might pick it up pretty cheap. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask
Hi Johnny. I am close to you in Vacaville but I am out of state right now for the next few months. There are quite a few people up here in Northern California and we had a meet last year that was fun. I was relatively new then, started in May 2014, and learned a lot. I am still new and my honing is still iffy. Good luck and smooth shaves to you.
Mike
Another brother from Cali. Welcome Johnny. Hope you enjoy the forum atmosphere. Plenty to learn and see.
Wellcome J,consider growing a beard, next year we will have no water to shave:)
Hi Johnny! Welcome to the Forum!
Welcome, to SRP. When it comes to straight razor shaving, you won't find a more knowledgeable and friendly group of guys than you will find here.
If you want some honing information & "how to", there's some in Lynn's YouTube video's I believe but here is gssixgun's YouTube video's too. Just scroll down where it says "load more" & click on it & you'll see 'em. He shows honing with the different brands of stones:
