I remembered after I asked about carbon damage.
Before sulfuric acid they used alum to pickle metal that had been burned. Pickleing removes carbon from metal.
I think a light strop on my alum block after I use it on my wet face should protect the metal from ashes better than stropping on felt and leather, and oiling the blade.
