Here's my post from North Pole AK

Hey all. Originally from Texas, but being in the military has put me in a lot of places. Between the every day shaving and mx upkeep of myself I got tired of spending so much on an experience I dreaded. My grandfather used a straight, my dad used a safety and I decided to go old school and save some cash. So far it's been great and I don't want to turn back. I keep a Gillete or Mach 3 or something should I ever wake up late. Right now I'm four shaves in, currently on leave, so the mustache and chin hair is still there. It's certainly easier to trim with the straight. Thanks for listening.

Welcome to the forum. I lived in Alaska 14 years, but farther south on the Glenn Hwy. Termination dust isn't far away and the fireweed should be topping out. Makes me kind of anxious, still, to think about it. I didnt mind the cold, but I hated the snow and by far I hated the darknes of winter. If one could just sell sunshine up there. :D

Thanks for the warm welcome. I've read the beginners forum and I've watched Lynn shave about 20 times already. I've been looking into this for a while and already have some plans to make my own scales and brushes. I've emailed a few companies about trying to just get the straight razor so I can design some scales and put together a personal gift for my old man. It's actually kind of hard to find a company that will sell just the blade as I've had no luck yet. I look forward to the knowledge on this forum as much as I do the Duramax forum;hopefully this forum is cheaper! I can certainly see and appreciate the art that goes into this type of shave. Again thanks for having me.

You might want to inquire, via a PM, among the various blade makers on the forum (check in the Custom Built and Restorations thread and the Vendor's Corner thread) if they have, or will sell an unscaled blade. There are a couple that I know of, but don't like making references in the open forum. Basically against policy. Some would come ready to put scales on and some might require additional sanding, polishing and honing. These are factors to be discussed with the blade makers.

True, not much cold water shaving being done here. As for products I'm using the Pacific Shaving Company All natural Shaving Cream, as that's what the kit came with. I'm looking into ordering some shave soap, just haven't picked out the one I want to try yet. My razor is a Dovo Best Quality half hollow. I've kept with my old post shave lotion Neutrogena Razor Defense. I find it works really well with my skin and doesn't have a overwhelming smell.

I have noticed that this, like any other hobby, can get quite expensive. I'm looking into stones right now, I shave every day so it makes sense to be able to hone them. I've looked into the honing section and as always, got great insight. Thanks to the site for having me once again, great info.

Welcome to the forum. I believe I read somewhere that there was a growing number of straight razor users in the military. The last razor I sold was actually shipped to a military base.
