New to SR, always welcome advice and help

Good afternoon all. My name is Kenny, and I'm new to straight razors. In fact, I had my first shave with one last night. I've been wet shaving for almost a year, vintage Gillettes (love my Slim Adjustable, among others), but decided to give a go at using a straight. The one that I'm using is a W&B loaned to me, along with a strop, by a member on another forum which I belong to. I came to SRP to get educated about the ins and outs of SR shaving (and collecting). I can already see that RAD will set in quickly, keep eyeing eBay straights that need a resto. I have nothing against new hardware, but have a love for vintage razors, DE or otherwise. Any help, advice, etc, would be encouraged and appreciated

My advice is to read over the Beginners Guide in the SRP library before you plan on purchasing and avoid ebay for the time being.

Thanks for the welcome @Leatherstockiings. I love James Fenimore Cooper, by the way. I've read over the beginner's guide, very helpful. And while I won't lie and say that I'm not gonna be checking out eBay, but, if I do make a purchase, it won't be with any intention of turning it into a shaver immediately. I want to try my hand at restoring, so I'll also be looking for straights in the local flea markets. I'm looking for some, for cheap, if possible, in distressed condition, that I can practice restoring slowly

How did your first shave go? I've only been at this a few months, and I'm starting to really get it down. But if you have specific problems you encountered, people can give thoughts on what may have caused your trouble.

Hello Kenny. Welcome to SPR. There are many experienced user here that are happy to sharer whatever knowledge you seek. You will find that it is not too complicated to learn. I am not a DE shaver but it seems from reading posts you have to watch your angle and use less pressure. Skin stretching is an important part of my SR shave.

Shaved last night, 3rd straight shave, knew that I wouldn't have time this morning. Went with a 3 pass, WTG, XTG, ATG, touch-up with my SuperSpeed. Used the SS on the head, not ready to put the straight to it yet. And......the closest shave on my cheeks that I've ever had. Just sooooo smooth. Right side of my neck is as smooth as I normally get with a DE, but the left side definitely could've used a little more work. But, the cheeks were an Oh My Gosh!!!! moment when I touched my cheeks after putting on my obligatory cocoa butter. I'm definitely seeing the progress, can't wait to shave tomorrow
