Introduction...finally

Hello all,

I'm sure some of the more hawk-eyed folk here will notice a little discrepancy between me finally posting an introduction and my join date. Let's just say I'm a master in procrastination and have been busy shaving ;)

First and foremost, thanks to the lot of you hard workers out there that keep this site maintained. I've been a lurker for years and have stolen as much knowledge as I could to benefit my face.

Secondly, thanks to all of you that restore those neglected blade and the custom craftsman. You've lit a fire under my keister to go raiding all the antique stores in my area.

May your lather be thick, your razor sharp and the blood kept to a minimum!

Well, I suppose I forgot to actually include any information about myself, heh

I'm a wisconsinite, so big fan of beer and cheese. Scotch as well, because, well, scotch. I'm also a big handball player. The one racquetball is based off of, not the olympic one. Also, sharp and shiny things, although you could probably say that about all of us. For any and all criticisms, never apologize, I want to get better not coddled. I went to a catholic grade school and have had some tough/old/mean teachers. :D

I've been using a Case razor circa 1989-1990, a Dovo special 5/8 w/ faux tortoise shell and a Dovo Shavette for the past few years. The last month or so I've been bitten by the RAD bug and have acquired a W.H. Morley barber's notch, a sword and crown ERN and a Wade & butcher wedge that was probably a poor purchase. I had been using a "Rupp Razor" strop for 4 years, costs necessitated that at the time but I've graduated to a SRD 3" natural. I picked up Naniwa 5k,8k,12k to hone my own razors after my gf had my Dovo and Case professionally sharpened with less than stellar results.

The results so far are pretty promising, I honed the Case and Morley and had irritation free shaves. Albeit, they felt kinda dull, especially in the toe area. Calibrating my TPT with the Shavette razors is so helpful that I think all newbies should but a pack from the nearest store. Immediately.

Hi dinnermint & welcome aboard since we all have not had an intro from you. It's never too late. As you know there is a wealth of information on here & many knowledgable members so if you have any questions, ask away. I hope you have seen video's on Youtube, especially Lynn Abrams, the owner of this forum. We would also love to see your razor's so far & might be able to be of some help to you. Glad you have been here & hope to have you participate much more often. We have a fun time one here.

I've watched all of Lynn's videos and a few of glens repeatedly. Gotta pound the information into the grey matter to make it stick!

I had originally picked up perusing this forum again about 3 weeks ago, started reading your guys' adventures in "The Butchered Blade" when I picked up Butchered Butcher. Told myself I'd start posting once I caught up or else I never would. I'm definitely envious of the razors, tools(small apt and no space) and ingenuity in this site!

Yes... The guys in the workshop, are a great bunch of guys, with tons of hands on experience and knowledge. They turned the bug loose on me a year ago and have been quarantined to only antique shops, my workbench, and shave den......oh the misery they've bestowed on me.[emoji38] [emoji38] [emoji38]

@outback, they sure do like the whips over there! It took me 2-3 weeks to finally get up to date on that thread.... All you guys are quite busy!

Disregard some of the scratch like things, it's TP from when I applied oil. Except for the Morley, it looks like someone got a little careless with this forum's favorite tool, herr dremel. There's a sticker on the box showing that it was either sharpened/purchased/honed at a grinder in Milwaukee. That drew me to it, plus the fact it was 8 bucks :D

Nice ern! Be careful no that your active. It's easy to convince yourself you absolutely positively have to have fancy shaving things, and they usually cost a lot of money. My fiance's from Wisconsin, and now I miss spotted cow!

dinnermint, I love that W.R. Case & Sons!!!!!! That one rocks! I won a Crandall Cutlery straight for very little a couple weeks ago because it was listed as a Randall Razor & I knew right away what it had to be!

Welcome, dmint. Indeed, that Case seems to be the best one. Those are Dovo-made from 1990+/-.
FME, they were ground a bit more carefully whilst being made for Case when Parker owned the name.
Everyone seems to say they are fine. Enjoy!

Welcome, it sounds like your doing well and ready to jump into the real trouble. You'll find it easy enough. It's fun though and better than watching the weeds grow.

Don't worry guys, you won't find me sitting on the side of the street with a cardboard sign saying "Will Hone for Food" I've already decided to keep my stock of razors limited to about 20. 2-7 day sets and a few customs. Maybe more if I win the lotto

Yea, that Case & sons has the most interesting story, being my first razor. My father and I took a road trip on his Harley, a '93 Softail Classic, when I was 10 or so to the Zippo/Case visitor's center for their "Zippo Days". I was always pretty obsessed w/ knives and Zippos (from Die Hard, of course.) There was an old collector there selling off some wares. I saw the Case blade and just had to have it! My dad made me promise that I would shave with it when I'm old enough. I told him "Of course! That'd be the coolest way to shave!" The guy liked my gumption, so he sold it to us for something like 10-15 bucks, because "No one shaves like that anymore". Lo' and behold, 12 years later I had a job interview the next day and no money for my Mach3 replacements. I remembered I had it stuffed away in a box full of all of random stuff from my childhood. Ran to Walgreens, picked up some VdH soap and a brush. Researched how to shave, wound up on here, learned what I could and shaved the next morning. And it went great! Pretty sure I bungled the interview, but my face was good!

Welcome and great story about the road trip with your Dad on his Harley. My Dad loved my Harley but HATED my straight razors.:)
