Brand new to SR's

Good morning everybody. My names Tommy and in portsmouth VA. I'm currently a GM1 (e6) in the Navy and have decided I'm sick of my face hurting from shaving everyday. So I researched about 5 months and decided it was time to go old school. I just ordered my first "kit" from Larry at whippeddog and look forward to starting this journey and hope I'm a quick learner. If there's anyone else in VA let me know and I hope to continue to get all the great information from the forum and hopefully one day be able to contribute some of my own knowledge. You will figure out how to ask, but as per advise given, the library can short track you to most any questions, and if you take the advise given your learning curve will shorten. Starting with the gear from Larry will do you just fine for now. Learn to strop and shave let the rest come later when you really know how to shave. And spend some time practicing the lather making, it's cheap and really helps when the lather is right.
Watch a lot of videos and then develope your own style too. Tc

Welcome Nkkenme. If you look on the left side of the welcome page you will find a list of easily accessed threads. Check the Local Help one and scroll down to Virginia and see if there are any members listed there. If so, contact one , or more, to see if they can sit down with you for a one-on-one session. What can be accomplished in a few face hours will cut months off your learning curve. If you were in the Northwest I'd push you to contact one of several shavers known for helping the new to the field. Good luck. We love questions.

Thank you everyone for the advice and the help already. Yesterday I received my starter kit from larry (who was an absolute pleasure to deal) and proceeded to try my first straight razor shave. It went surprisingly well. I didn't cut or nick my self shaved my whole face and neck and only got a little bit of razor burn on the left side of my face (I'm right handed). I am having a really hard time figuring out how to get my upper lip shaved and my chin. There are so many different angels and surfaces. Also getting my shave soap to lather was really difficult. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed it and love the fact I don't have razor bumps today. If anyone has any advice on my trouble areas it would be greatly appreciated. Loving it so far. Can't help you with the upper lip and chin, I haven't shaved those areas since I started. Too many issues and people think I look funny w/o facial hair....

As far as lathering, I have had some recent issues when switching from cream to hard soaps, especially with the quality of water we have here. This video helped oodles...

Although YMMV depending on the soap that you have.

TLDR; Experiment with water quantity and soap amount, I found more soap then gradually adding water will help you get to where you need to be
