Should I just read all of the posts for the next 27 hours and probably have all my questions answered .
You can ask questions here, for sure.
Ok so I've been very intrigued about shaving with a straight razor. My question right now is; should I invest a little bit of money in he perceived easy to use Shevette style razor while getting accustomed to strapping an old fashioned straight razor first.
Welcome from SE Washington State/Walla Walla to be precise.
You will find that 99.99% of Everything about wet shaving and shaving with a Straight Razor in particular is the Big Two P's;PersonalPreference.
While I've never used a Shavette there are those that either use them daily or for travel.
'Personally' I'd say get a used beginner level straight and a decent strop, a basic brush, soap and shaving soap and see what you think about this age old art. Then if you get the bug expand and see what you prefer.
Look in the classified here at SRP for a beginner's razor.
I'd go straight to a straight, hehe. That's the route I took and used a shavette when both my blades got dull/when I was roadtrippin'. Shavettes are nice, but the whole pressure/feel aspect of a straight can be difficult to adapt from a shavette. Some places to look (in no particular order, just what I remember)

If you pick out a razor/strop and have any tickling of doubt. Post on the forum someone will chime in to help you out.
Welcome to SRP. Yup. I would go straight to a regular straight razor. You can get a decent shave ready one on the classifieds fairly often. One good one just sold for $35. A decent razor for a great price. Smooth shaves to you.

Check out the pawn shops and antique stores on Montana Avenue next time you are in Billings.
A year ago one of the pawn shops located on a corner had a few new Bokers at not much more than $100.
I'd go with a regular straight. Shavettes use either single or double edged blades, and finding the right blade takes some time...some are sharper than others, and it can be tricky to narrow down problems in technique or blades if you're first learning.
A nice 5/8 or 6/8 blade from the Classifieds here will get you started for a reasonable price. You can buy something prettier later once you're sure you like shaving with a straight.
As a newbie here my self I can relate. I currently use a shavette (Dovo). A couple of things to keep in mind about them is that shavettes do NOT need to be stroped. You replace the actual blade in them while keeping the body. Many barbers use them. They work well in my experience. That also means that which blades you buy will make a HUGE difference in the shave and how long you can use the same blade. Blade choice probably makes more of a difference than what shavette you get, but I don't know seeing as I've always used my Dovo. In fact, availability of good blades is why I'm starting to look a going "all the way" into a true straight razor. I can tell you not to use the ones in the orange and black box from walmart and everywhere else in my area that are "ice tempered". I cant remember the brand name, sorry. But ultimately the choice is yours. I just wanted to give you some thoughts on the shavette side seeing as it appears everyone else here went straight for the straight. best of luck!

So yesterday I managed to get a third shave in on the awesome loner front cudarunner. Thanks Roy. I really appreciate it. I ordered a strop yesterday can't wait till it comes. I have a week long cruise leaving this weekend so I'll have lots of time to practice.
Reply back.this is brian genovese from bozeman /Helena /Butte area.
Hey man, I got up this morning and I'm planning on using my new shaving setup again, I had a member offer me a loaner razor that was honed, stroped and shave ready. After a few shaves, I was hooked, so I ordered a strop and Roy offered to hone a used razor I found at a have sale , for like 40$ I got a nice Bismarck registered celluloid with silver end caps and a gold tang.
I also got a badger hair brush. Seems decent.
But I thought I would say hi, because I really feel like not using a cartridge razor again for a while. Lol well here is what I just got going.. I also got a natural 3'' strop.

Welcome.
I would recommend a combination of reading up and asking questions. Have a scroll through the beginners and razor fora and you will see a lot of similar questions and answers, this will probably help you to refine the questions that you want/need to ask.
Hey Brian,
Good to hear that you're liking not only the loaner but the cleaning and the edge on that Bismarck. The Bismarck looks much nicer in real life than the photo and it's a Great Shaver too!
I'd like to clarify that the Bismarck was purchased for about $40, the clean up and honing were on me n/c :w hehehe
I think you've got what it takes to make this a Lifestyle. #1 you have Patience and that's what makes or breaks a newbie. Of course it doesn't hurt to have a couple of good shaving straights that are truly shave ready along with a nice strop and some decent soaps.
Enjoy the ride! It's a long strange trip but well worth the journey. :tu
