Hello everyone,

I'm excited to join this community, first a little bit about me (Married, Father of 3) and what has brought me here and gotten me interested in straight razor shaving.

One is that vintage things appeal to me. I don't always buy into the idea that everything newer, faster, and shinier is better. Many times the old way of doing things is still the best way (even if often the slower way). I can certainly see myself really enjoying collecting razors and supplies, and I'm excited that one day this is something I could teach my son (he's my youngest so I've got a lot of years still to figure it out first).

Two is that I am in Addiction Recovery. A crucial part of my recovery is actually taking time for myself, and investing time in myself. In my addiction, I had no self-worth and didn't even bother shaving most of the time as taking even 10-15 minutes to do something for myself felt like wasted time. When it would get too much and I had to shave, it was just a quick buzz with a set of trimmers. In my recovery, this is an small area where I have started to allow myself to take time just for me. It feels good to have a good shave, and even just using a disposable razor this has been a positive change for me. I think Straight Razor shaving would be a great next step, as it appeals to my vintage enthusiast and will also hopefully help me slow down and really appreciate the time with myself. It sounds like a self-care win.

Now all that said, I don't have much disposable income (as my therapy costs are draining the family coffers, but are also considered non-optional at this point), so I'll also be posting a thread for some starting on a budget advice. I've done some reading and have some ideas on how I can try to get going without too much initial outlay and would like to run it by you guys.

I would recommend that you contact some of the active members and ask if they can mentor you in the beginning or if they can help you find a mentor in you area. That will make the learning curve much easier and you will probably end up with a new friend :)

Since you started a separate thread with your question I'm not gonna comment on that here but I will give you a piece of advice that cant be said enough times... Take it slow. When I started out I wanted to learn everything at once, to make the lather, to strop, to shave, to maintain a razor, to restore a razor, to hone etc. And I wanted to try all the different products, different soaps and creams, aftershaves, brushes and so on... It made it much harder for me... So take one step at a time and focus on that and you'll be fine!

One more thing, yes – It it a good way to spend some quality time with your self and some time with only you and the razor. I think it is a needed therapy for all of us in this stressful world we are living in. As you said, faster is not always better...

Hi and welcome aboard. There are plenty of ways to keep it to a low start up. As said the easiest way is to just start with what you need and learn how to use it without buying everything. Then just buy bits as required. Any questions feel free to ask we are always happy to help

Spending time with just yourself shaving is a great way to spend your time. I didn't realize it when I started with a straight, but I very quickly noticed the positive effect on my attitude that a 30 minute straight shave gave me. And even though my wife makes fun of me for the amount of time I spend in the bathroom now, and the fact that I have more aftershaves than she has perfumes, she has nothing but love for my smooth shaven face.

So find a mentor in your area, start shaving, and start enjoying life.

Straight razor shaving you will find to be "all about you: time.
The time it takes never last long enough IMO. I enjoy every aspect of the shave and the time doing it.
Straight razor shaving doesn't have to be expensive. You've come to the right place and people here will help you out as much as they can with advice and friendship.

Hello guy, you are on the good place to the zen shaving art. If you master french, you can also have a look on le coupe-chou club, the french sr forum.
When your son will be older but still a small boy, make him a moke-up in wood or plastic, so he can "shave" on your side. Sure he will ask to prepare the lather.
