Greetings, all you glabrophiles out there!
Hello all,
My name's Andy. I'm an Emergency Room doc and mad bike-rider living and working up in Far North Queensland, Australia.
I've been reading your wonderful forum since I was introduced to the joys of traditional shaving by my partner earlier this year. I've found so much useful information, met some helpful members and it's lent quite a few improvements to my (DE) techniques already.
So far, I've got myself a pretty natty DE shaving kit and can feel my technique improving with each shave.
I'm in the process of compiling a straight razor shaving arsenal (leather strop - tick, linen strop - tick [DIY], cleaning and storage gear - tick) and am eagerly awaiting the arrival of a vintage straight lovingly restored by SRP member Substance. I'd love to share my first experience straight shaving with the forum and am sure I'll get some helpful insights.
Growing up, I'd always known my dad to shave with an electric razor. Consequently, it was my brother and I who taught him to shave with a (cartridge-style) blade. For my shaving life up til now, I've used multiple-blade cartridge razors of varying qualities and have never found shaving particularly enjoyable, mindful or satisfying. This year, I was Best Man at my friend's wedding and, in preparation for the task, went and got a haircut and hot-towel shave at a traditional barber shop in Melbourne. I enjoyed it so much (chair, towel, brush, soap, straight razor, whisky) that I couldn't shut up about it and my long-suffering, thoughtful partner took the hint and presented me with a locally-compiled double-edged shaving kit as an anniversary present (towel, brush, soap, DE handle, blades - I supplied the whisky;)). Since then, I've doggedly anticipated every chance to use it and the nigh on meditative experience I now find shaving.
The existence of this forum makes perfect sense given the dizziness complexity of the traditional-shaving world that's suddenly been revealed to me and I'm grateful.
Many thanks and nice to meet you all!
