Morgantown. Southeast Pa.
Welcome to SRP!!!
As you've seen, many helpful gents and great advice.
I also agree with checking out the B/S/T area and going with a round point 5/8-7/8
You may find, like many of us, that the old Sheffield steel is amazing to shave with. Enjoy and have fun!!!!
Welcome to the forum.
You have already had great advice here. I don't have much to add really as I live in the UK so I use a UK vendor.
The BST section here is a good place to look for sure. If they are selling and say shave ready you know that they have shaved with it so you won't go far wrong.
Good luck.
Welcome to SRP! The B/S/T section is where I got my first truly "shave ready" razor and it's where I go whenever I "need" a new one. The folks who sell here for the most part are very experienced and when they say "shave ready" they mean they've shaved their own hair with it and it's passed their high standards. when you buy something elsewhere you dont necessarily get that much scrutiny (though I have had luck elsewhere to be sure)
Buying brand new is an option, but it's my opinion that you're going to be better off with a nice vintage professionally honed razor for your first experience. It sounds sort of elitist, but the razors of old just seem to be more consistent and shave better than most of the new ones I have. (one man's opinion)
Good Luck!!! have some fun in the adventure, and i'm sure you'll find that wet shaving is a considerable step above both in the shave itself, and the experience.
SRD, SRP b/s/t, yes, as the others have said. I'd also look at The Shaving Shop with John Crowley. He sells among other brands, the Wacker, a very good new production razor. I've bought 3 from him.
Hi and welcome aboard. Good luck with finding your first razor. Any questions feel free to ask
im in lancaster. and have about 50 razors in all shapes and sizes - full wedge to full hollow, 5/8 to 7/8, mostly sheffield or solingen. happy to let you test and see what you like best so you ultimately buy with some confidence.
let me know if interested.
Sloanwinters,
Very nice offer. I may take you up on that. As an update to this thread, I did make a purchase yesterday from the BST!
Very positive experience, and I feel a great purchase.
I owe a great deal of thanks to everyone who has provided input and guidance here. But I want to especially thank Rod B for not only selling me a quality piece at a fair price. But once he knew I was a "first timer", he took extra measures to ensure it was going to be shave ready for me. In addition he took the time the answer my "sidebar" questions.
An experience that was pretty well predicted by those forum users who took the time to offer their input regarding how I should proceed with this first razor purchase, btw.
So in summary, just a big thanks to all involved. So far, a great experience indeed!
