    Default Hello from Oregon

It was suggested kindly that I really ought to post a new member introduction thread, before posting willy-nilly everywhere else. So here I am.

I'm from Oregon. Been to a bunch of other places, and wound up back in Oregon. I've been wet shaving for 20ish years now. Been a member of The Shave Den since 2010. A bit more recent on some of the other forums. Really recent on this one. I have a large collection of vintage razors, and a tiny collection of straights. Pretty much just learned them enough to be able to say "yeah, so? I can do that too." My favorite shaver is the Rolls Razor, which is what really started making me eye my straight razors again.

Speaking of those, I have a Theirs-Issard Spartacus 5/8, a Yankee Cutlery Co. Lion Brand "Damascus Magnetic Steel" 5/8, and a nice C-Mon Special 6/8. The C-Mon is actually a replacement for my grandfather's mint C-Mon Special, which was given to me when I was 10 or so. (Don't give kids razors. They'll do something stupid with them, like try to use them as screwdrivers. Then they'll feel regret until they replace it). I also have my grandfather's strop. You can tell by the condition of the strop what kind of condition his razor was in... *Sigh* He was a jack of all trades, and a master of most. Truck driver, barber, piano tuner, musician, music teacher and locksmith. As the eldest son of his eldest son, I wound up with his straight razor, strop, pocket watch, pocket knife and one of his guitars.

I have an extensive collection of vintage shavettes, and two Tedalus Essence Artist Club type razors. I bought one after the other, along with a stand, was given to me by the creator in thanks for my assistance in helping him design the internal working parts of the thing.

    My hone collection is small and poor, but I'm working on expanding it. I have a 6" x 2" x 1" BBW, a small 3 1/2" x 1 3/4" x 7/8" 'La Veinette' Coticule with very little Coticule left, an 8" x 2" x 1/2" dragon's tongue Welsh slate, and an 8" x 2" x 1" Scotch Dalmore Blue.

I know you all like pictures, so I'll stick them in a follow up post.

A few more details. My name is Ryan Foster, by the way. Been using the handle PLANofMAN since my gaming days. It comes from a very old sci-fi series called "The Starchild Trilogy." The super computer that ruled the earth was called the Plan of Man. I liked it, took it, and it's stuck with me.

We come from a long line of leather workers, so each generation has taken good care of it. It's seen more Foster family backsides than razors, but I'm working on reversing that trend.

As best I can tell, he purchased it new, along with the razor, in the late 1940's or early '50's, for a whopping total of $5 for the razor and $2.50 for the strop. At least according to an old catalog I glanced at when I was younger.

As a side note, how the hell do you edit posts without inadvertently deleting them?

I live in Salem, Oregon, though I do go work up at the shipyard in Seattle for a few months every year or so. I'm usually working in the Portland, OR area. I'm a boilermaker by trade.

Reopen your post, then you can edit it. I believe that you have 24 hours to do so.
