Not a Beginner but a Re-Bigninner

I used to shave with a straight razor all the time, loved it. Spent quite a bit of time here and did so daily. Six years ago I retired and after being told for 40 years that I could not grow a beard, I did. So my beard is certainly ZZ Toppish and very long and white. Won’t shave it. My head has been shaved or close to it for over 25 years. Never tried shaving my head with a straight razor.

My razors, Badger brushes and other items have been locked away in one of my gun safes ever since I retired. I have truly missed shaving with them and perhaps just as much honing my razors along with making great shaving soap with Tobac.

I have been shaving my head with some balding clippers for well over 20 years and about a month ago I decided to shave my head with a terrible newish left over Gillette razor of my wife’s and old left over tri-blades. Was going to be out of town for over a week and was not bringing clippers and hate the look of a week old clipper cut. Did that for a few weeks and decided to get my old stuff out of the safe.

Got my straight razor stuff out of the safe and moved my best strop back into my bathroom. All my strops have resided on my gun bench for the last 6 years and only used sporadically for my knives. A poor use of some quality strops. Did my first head shave a couple days ago and am certainly out of practice and my razors also need a good refresh. But I am excited about using my old friends, again. Ordered some more Tabac soap and that just arrived.

For some of the older members that may remember me, I quit smoking my pipe about five years ago after a few surgeries. Yes, I miss smoking my pipes daily. Sold a ton of my old tinned tobacco and pipes to a good old friend a few moths ago and also discovered that he was into straight razors and shaving with them. That may have been what piqued my interest a little more for my razors.

Had another surgery last Friday (getting old is not for sissies) and so have not been too active the last few days. Tomorrow the hones will be brought up and at least two or three of my razors will get a nice refresh.

Was very sorry to find that Straight Razor Designs is no more as they were pretty much my go to for supplies and razors, too. Any suggestions for a new go to place. Google has not been very helpful.

Still very much into my handguns and especially my Wilson’s and Nighthawks. Just got back from my yearly pilgrimage to Berryville, AR.

To my old friends a big hello and hoping some new old friends will come my way, too.

Thank you, good to be back. Excited to restart my journey, although in a new direction. It seems doing the head is a little more tricky than the face, all feel and not a lot of visual feedback. But shaving with a straight was always a highlight of my day. Similar to reloading ammo when only one thing counts and all the rest fades away, if only just for while.
