I am pretty new to this too. I bought one that took disposables from my barber a few weeks before I decided to go full speed ahead and get the Dovo. I found that it was quite different that the disposable. You will be shocked at how different it feels.

Im a new member, had a few SR's on the cupboard, recently began increasing the collection from local markets and shops.

Hi all,
I don't think I ever introduced myself so here it goes...
I have used every mode of shaving known to man (except hoe and ax). I found straight works well. I have been shaving with a straight (almost exclusively) for about 8 yrs now.
I am a chemist so I enjoy topics such as aftershaves and soaps. I also hone my razors. I live in Melbourne, Australia.
People cringe when they hear I am shaving with straight razor. My father in law is supportive and has listed a few anectodes from his father...
I live an extremely busy lifestyle and do not post as often as I would like to. However, I will always questions and will always assist new players in the game.
My love for SE shaving goes with my love for fountain pens, cigars, wines and other nice things we are blessed to enjoy in life.
Take care..........
HI, I'm Bryan. I just wanted to say hello to everyone out there. Love the site. I have recently become interested in straight razor shaving and restoration of such. I glad i found this place, such a wealth of information out tere for noobs like myself. I'm currently looking at my first straight razor, not sure what kind yet, but i'm lookin' hard. It's nice to find a place were everyone is so happy to help one another. Hope to conversemore with all of you, about the great world of straight shaving.
I'm Jack. I have been lurking here for months and joined just a short while ago. I have been delighted to find such a large group of people who so enjoy wet shaving.
About me: I've been using a straight razor for about 25 years and rarely shave any other way. The tragedy of 9/11 is a constant reminder to me because I'm a frequent traveler and have always liked to carry my bag aboard and of course the razor can't board with me any more. I'm even finding that my DE blades can't go aboard. I'm now hearing that with the recent Christmas day attempted bombing we will not even be allowed to read books in the last hour of a flight. Go figure.
I am so delighted by this site! What got me started here...about a year ago I was looking for some advice on honing my razors -- a Hoffritz 6/8 stainless I bought in 1986 and a Dovo 5/8 carbon steel I got in the 90s. I'd been sending them out for years for honing (about once a year each) and figured why not learn. Youtube showed me what to do. I was amazed at how much advice was out there. I got hooked up with Norton, learned about finishing stones, started cruising for soaps, Classic Shaving and Vintage Blades entered my lexicon, and I eventually bookmarked SRP. It's been a great deal of fun. I'm now a Tony Miller fan, know more about Bay Rum than I thought was possible (or wanted), have moved from more than two decades of using Old Spice Mug soap to a pile of creams and soaps that makes the decision each morning painful -- you know, not which shaving treatment you select but rather the ones not picked (like that Jewish mother who gives her son two shirts for his birthday...the son shows up for dinner the following week wearing one..."So my son, you didn't like the other shirt?") And now here I introduce myself. SRP has contributed the Alum Block to my repetoire.
For about 20 years I was the only person I knew who used a straight. On a golf trip in Myrtle Beach I found out that another member of our group -- a person I did not know -- also used one, I found this out only because we both had straights in the same condominium. I've always enjoyed the looks of awe and admiration from friends and acquantences who discovered my razor. Somewhat akin to the look people give you after they find out you have voluntarily jumped out of a perfectly good plane.
Perhaps I have something to offer this community but it could never come close to the enjoyment I have experienced just lurking here. I'll be around and join the fun.
Hi, I'm Cliff. I live in northeast Texas and have just started shaving with a straight razor. Actually today was my first complete shave with a straight. I started about a week ago, and am a lot more comfortable with the razor now. At first, it was very awkward, and a little scary. I felt so confident this morning after finishing WTG, that I attempted a second pass XTG. I got a couple of nicks and decided to stop there. Straight razors have become an obsession. I have already acquired 3 Dovo's(the Bismarck is my favorite), 1 C-Mon, 1 Wade & Butcher, 2 J.A. Henckels, and a J.A. Henckels 7 day set. I have got to stop spending money.......
Hello all, Im Glenn from Lake Hiawatha New jersey. I just wanted to say hello officially and introduce myself to the group. Have always been fascinated by the art of straight razor shaving but was a bit fearful of trying it due to the lack of information available to me until my wife found SRD for me as well as the forums. She purchased my 1st startup kit last christmas (Dovo c-mon Blackie, Illinois razor strop#835, dovo badger brush and cup as well as lynns video). Its been a full year now and im still trying to perfect my shaving ritual ( Im sure that I am not the only one :)). I actually look foward to shaving now and dont look at it as a chore anymore but actually find it a stress reliever due to the intense concentration, it helps in clearing my mind and focussing on the task at hand. Just received my 1st scuttle a Georgetown Pottery G/5 for christmas from my daughter and am currently awaiting my new razor my wife ordered for me (Dovo best class 5/8 stainless steel with Iron wood scales). As soon as I get It Ill post my set up so all can see its kinda sharp looking !!! :) Chat you soon... Glenn
Hi all, new to to forums and relatively new(4 months) to straight razor shaving. I have been lunking here for a little while, and I have learned a ton. Thank you all. I look forward to contributing to the forum on an ongoing basis as I continue to explore the world of Straight Razor Shaving.
My gear so far:
Dovo Best Quality Razor - or not so best quality. lol
A Kanayama 70000 strop - I love it.
A Plisson Black Badger size 12 Shaving Brush
Castle Forbes Lime Essential Oil Shaving Cream - to die for
Pre de Provence Shea Butter enriched Shaving Soap - again to die for
Proraso shaving cream
and for my lazy days or when I do not have time:
1946-1949 Gillette Aristocrat DE and Feather Blades
At this point I lack a decent aftershave. I am currently using the Gillette aftershave but am not too happy for obvious reasons(supermarket product suck) Can anyone recommend a good shaving cream that is widely available that I might get started with?
Anyway, I think I'm off to a decent start. I'm open to suggentions for stuff I might want to add other than aftershave.
I should comment on my shaving technique. Well it is coming along. I have watched the recommended videos and I have scoured youtube on my own. I think I just need practise. My shave is close, but it takes me a while to get finiched up at this point and I keep changing things up like doing it all one handed one day then switching to left handed for the left side of my face and then right handed for the right side of my face(as recommended). Still feeling out what fells right.
I should comment on my honing technique. I have watched all of the videos etc. and I think my technique is ok. I've sharpened knifes for a god part of my life, so I am confortable with the razor on the stone.
I should also comment on my stropping technique. I think it's coming along. Again, because I've sharpened knives for a good chunk of my life, I feel comfortable with the bresure and taughntess of the strop. I have room to improve of course. But, I am happy with the end result after honing and stropping.
Anyway, enough about me. I'm glad to be here. Lots to learn. Catch you later.
Hi My name's Davis and i'm new here. I am just now getting into shaving because i was left my grandfather's shaving collection when he passed away 6 weeks ago. I thought all his old razors are really cool, and i'm just now learning how to use them.
Please do not discuss sales in open threads this needs to be dealt with in Pm's. I would also suggest that all of the new people just getting into this hobbie reading and educating yourselves on razor brands and values before selling off family collections. Just my 2 cents worth.
I'm sure there are a lot of us, well here goes. Have used the SR for about 4 weeks now. GREAT shave taking it slow at first but you learn more with each shave. Got the set-up from VBLLC and SRD. Great advice from these two sites and of course this one. Recomend buying and watching Lynn's video for all newbies. Also check out UTUBE. There you are I did it my first post.
Hello all
I'm originally from Scotland but now living in the south of Spain. I've been hanging out here for a while gathering data for my first SR purchase when I was surprised last week by a like-new Dovo from a friend who had never used it. It was supposedly bought shave ready but seems to lack an edge, certainly not passing the HHT. I know that there are a few options in the UK but I'd like to find honing services on mainland europe.
Anyway, thanks all for the copious information and I hope to be using the razor regularly in the coming weeks. On a side note I followed a thread about the the Santa Maria Novela shaving cream and happen to be in a coffee shop around the corner from their Madrid store. I'm heading over there now, hope that they're open :)
Total straight razor n00b, on here for pointers and research, and hopefully a decent strop at some point. Have only looked around a little, but the discission seems pretty cordial. That ought to be refreshing.
My Gawd, Missouri and Texas have got a lot of new intros! Whadda'ya guys do down there? Put something in the water? Your spring and summer meets should just about double!
O.K. How many of you newer folks are from Indiana and Michigan? C'mon, step up. Don't be shy.
Welcome to all and have fun!
Kev
kevbell - I'm a new member from Indiana. Joined SRP a few weeks ago.
Hello everyone. My name is Randy and I live in Northern VA just outside Washington DC. I have never used a DE or a SR but find myself very attracted to the idea. I have in the past shaved with soap and brush. While I was in the navy on submarine duty regular shave cream from cans were not allowed. I have just received my first DE and am looking forward to getting started. Thanks!
Hi Randy...Welcome to SRP.
I know you will enjoy your DE. It will go quite well with your soap and brush.
BTW...When you were in the service, what type of submarine were you stationed on? An attack sub or a boomer? Just wondering...
Fast attack .. 637 and 688 class. I may be sick but I really enjoyed sub duty ... Thoughts on a SR ... thinking of jumping in once I use the DE for a few months. Thanks for the response and Happy New Year!
Thanks Randy...
So you sailed in a Sturgeon and Los Angeles class fast attack sub. Fantastic! Glad to hear that you enjoyed sub duty. I teach military history in college, which includes some discussion of U. S. Naval history. I also build 1/350 scale ship models when I have the time; and one I recently finished is the U. S. S. Los Angeles.
As for your thoughts on a str8 razor...You are taking the same road I did. Bought a DE last fall and used it until this December, then got bitten by the str8 razor bug. I guess it was visiting all those wet shaving websites to purchase shave creams and blades for my DE. I still use my DE during the weekday, but IME there is nothing quite as relaxing as the ritual of a str8 razor shave on the weekend.
The fellows at Straight Razor Place will be able to offer you a lot of good advice on purchasing a str8 razor. The wiki at SRP also has a ton of useful information.
The Vintage Blades LLC website also has some useful information and an inventory of really nice razors. I think it is located in MD. The owner, Jim Ayres, gave me some useful advice when I was thinking about buying my first str8 razor--a Dovo Black Star. Straight Razor Designs is also a good website to check out when you decide to take the plunge. I warn you, though, str8 razor shaving is like Lay's Potato Chips...Nobody can shave with just one. (LOL)
Let me and the rest of the gang at SRP know how your DE and str8 razor shaving go. Maybe you can post a pic of your DE shaving ensemble in the DE forum.
Happy New Year to you as well....
Hello everyone!
My name is Nick. I love to shave and I love everything that has to do with shaving. I am really excited about getting into the straight razor culture. I need to understand what I'm looking at, I need to understand the lingo, and most importantly I need to know how to shave with these beautiful pieces of art. Any and all assistance will be great. Happy New Year and wonderful shaving to all!
Nick
Hello Everyone,
I was referred here as a good source of information by a member of Badger and Blade forum. My name is John and I'm 45 years of age and live in Melbourne, Australia. I've recently returned to the simple pleasure of DE shaving and spending many years using both an electric and disposables. Today I purchased my first straight razor. It is an EKS that is in pretty good condition but needs a hone and could you with a little clean up to make it completely shave ready. I've always been intrigued by the art of straight shaving so I thought that I'd give it a try.
I try to enjoy the good things in life like decent suits, nice shoes, good coffe, expensive wristwatches, the occassional good cigar and now a good shave. I used to enjoy a good red wine and measure of a good spirit but decided that I probably enjoyed them too much so I stopped earlier this year. I currently work as a Global Risk Manager for a division of Shell so I get to travel around the world for work a reasonable amount.
Well, that's me.
Hello Nick and John...Welcome aboard SRP!
Hey, just got my first straight razor for Christmas after 2 years of asking for one, along with the kit and everything. I like the fact that the razors are something you keep, hone and sharpen for years and years in a world where everything is so disposable. Last night I tried my hand at honeing, and not sure I get it just yet, but will. I'm gonna go through some of the other posts now... Great site!:tu
hello, everyone! my name is matt and im about a month into doing the whole straight razor thing, I have always been interested in it and just decided to take the leap, and now im addicted, all my home pages are straight razor related and its awesome!!!!
Ok maybe just ready to slice those whiskers off hopefully there won't be too much dicing :). I am ready to take the plunge. After immersing myself in the wonderful world of wetshaving with a DE and trying out so many great soaps and creams and enjoying some great shaves I knew it would come to this. I wanted to jump straight in to str8's a few years ago but I thought that was just too tall of mountain to scale. But I now realize
I was walking on a slippery slope using my HD and lurking on these shave forums always peeking at all the str8 sections.
So I am waiting for my 6/8 DOVO special and Filly practice strop. I wanted to start slow and with something new in order to take advantage of the deal at SRD. It was a hard fight between the Bismark and the special but this one won out. I may get the Bismarck later along with many others. I've been pretty good at sticking to just my faithful HD DE but I don't think I will be able to resist these Str8's. They're just a work of art for an art that I am glad I found.
Thanks for all your great info. Really. I have learned a lot just in this short time from you all.
Welcome to SRP and Happy New Year!
Great choice in a str8 razor. You won't be disappointed. I recently purchased a Dovo from SRD like you and have begun to learn how to strop and shave with my "masterwork in steel."
The SRP wiki as well as the various forums will provide you with lots of useful information about the care and use of your razor and strop. I also found Lynn Abrams' dvd, "World of Straight Razor Shaving" invaluable as I ventured into str8 razor shaving.
Again, welcome aboard.
Thanks. I was able to order the DVD as well. I appreciate the words of encouragement.
welcome all to srp
if you were ordering at srd anyways i think you should've opted for their strop instead of the fili. when you get it in a set with the razor it's $30 and the fabric component and the real hardware are well worth the $10 more.
i'm sure you'll be happy with your set up.
Thanks. Yeah that sounded pretty good. I think I read that here but I guess I was really trying to keep the price down and it was late at night when I finally ordered. Thought about it the day after I had ordered, so I guess its too late. Oh well. I will look forward to getting a really good strop in the future.
My name's Tony. I've been a member here for many years but due to circumstances I haven't been on in a VERY long time. I currently own 4 straights but haven't used them in a long time due to many factors. I recently started shaving again (been sportin a beard for a while) and have been using a DE that belonged to my great grandfather. I'm sad to say all my straight are uselessly dull. Hopefully I'll be able to aquire the proper hones to get my straights back to shaving condition soon.
Hello everyone, my name is Matt. I just found the website and have only just recently purchased a couple of straight razors to help beat the credit crunch, and I am now totally hooked on them!
Matt Riddell
hi there. i am just getting into straight razor shaving. i actually bought my soap and brush today! i have a question though. the one thing that is really holding me back is that i shave my head, and i am scared to do that with a straight by myself. is it possible? or is it probably a lot easier than i think? any advice or encouragement would be helpful. thanks!
From across the pond...Hello Matt. Happy New Year and welcome to SRP...
Glad to hear that you have an ensemble of str8 razors and that you are totally hooked on them. Perhaps one day you'll describe your masterpieces in steel or post some pics of them on SRP. You can also describe your shave-of-the-day (SOTD)--another popular feature of SRP.
You'll find lots and lots of info. at SRP to help you maintain and better utilise your str8 razors in the SRP wiki and its various forums. The members are quite friendly and full of advice and encouragement to newbies.
Again, welcome aboard. Shave on!
wow, so many people out there!
I'm a couple of posts in, but very much a lurker - thought I'd add my intro to the masses; name's Stuart. another Brit (I live in the North East - Hartlepool, where they hung the monkey!)
I started getting into quality shaves (moving from Mach3) about 1 year ago when I got heavily into DE razors, but your website has been my inspiration to move into the top echelon of shavers!
I got my first straight 6-7mths ago. I now have four and have ordered another - what is happening to me??:)
Anyway, all the best for the New Year to all you guys (and lasses) out there.
Happy 2010.
Stuart
It certainly is possible, I do it myself. As you might imagine, the back of the head is the hardest part because you can't see what you're doing. Some use two mirrors, some do it by touch. I personally do it by touch, but you'll have to experiment and find out what works best for you. I'd suggest learning to shave your face with a straight razor before tackling your head though.
Hello Stuart and Happy New Year--from across the pond.
Your journey from multi-blade to DE to str8 razors is just like mine. I used a multiblade razor for decades. Then I switched to a DE a few months ago and noticed that my shaves were much closer, without the razor burn and irritation that accompanied my use of a Mach 2 or 3. The next step was inevitable--I purchased a str8 razor set for myself this Xmas and have been progressing incrementally in my use of it since then.
Like you, I acquired four str8 razors just last month and another is on the way. Although I only use one on a regular basis, a Dovo "Black Star" Red Pakkawood, I love them all.
One last observation...You needn't worry about acquiring so many str8 razors. It is a condition commonly referred to as RAD (Razor Acquistion Disorder) here at SRP. Not to worry, though. That is a good thing. The next best thing to shaving with a str8 razor is having lots of them on hand. That way you always have a shave ready razor available for use.
Perhaps one day you will share some pics of your growing collection of str8 razors with other SRP members. I'm sure they will be most appreciative. I know that I will.
Shave on...
I'm a lurker I guess, joined, posted in a few of the other areas of the forum, but haven't done an introduction. I grabbed a few ol rustys to play around with for restoration for lack of a hobby, and have the addiction now. I'm a research hound at this point but have made a couple of lucky grabs from the antique shops.Anyways I'm glad to meet you guys, and my biggest pleasure so far is eyeballing all the wonderful resto jobs you guys post, keep them coming please.
Perhaps I should mention I'm in Missouri, and if there's any kind of get togethers ever, I'd like to know about them, and get an opportunity to learn some stropping and honing techniques.
Hi to everyone. Just signed up. Not new to razors, just new here. What a great place. So happy to be here.
