Greetings from an OK expat! My grandparents moved to California during the dust bowl...a story almost exactly from Grapes of Wrath.
If you want to get going on the cheap, get a basic brush and soap setup from Walmart (if you don't have a basic setup already) and a nice razor from the classifieds, a $20 filly strop and you'll be set for shaving for a LONNNNGGG time!
If you have more change to spend, Straight Razor Designs can't be beat
