Hi everyone, I just discovered SRP a few days ago, and glad I did. I received my first straight razor for Christmas 2009 from my daughter. It is a Erbe shavette (solingen) You know.. With the replaceable blades.
Anyway, I have had a ton of success with it, I've got it down to about 10 bloodletting free shaves now. Had a couple of mishaps at first, but figured it out.
I bought 2 china straights (Kreugar and Gold medal) for $15 ea. WOW!!! well after $20 for honing and then having to redo them at about 10 hrs each, they actually shave, but I need to get a finishing stone to complete the task. Anyway.. never again will I buy that crap, they're pretty to look at but crappy... I just got 3 old straights off ebay ( Kreuz Shild, G.Wostenholm & son I-XL, and a H Boker King of whiskers ) for a total of $22. for the lot. They're all in sort of rough shape, but have decent edges and very little rust mostly staining, scales being the worst concern. I just finished the renovation of the Kreuz (before finding the reno section in SRP forums) with purpleheart scales and a good buff & polish on the blade, and I must say, for my first attempt it is a showpiece. I'll post pics once I figure out how to photograph it and get good light/pics. Needless to say, I've been bitten and have the bug.
Anyway, I'm really happy to have found SRP, it is a wealth of info, and I have to say, the reno's I saw on here last night for the first time, are absolutely beautiful.
