Greetings from Texas
I'm 53 and have owned my str8 for many years (seldom used) but after being here I really realize how far I was off on my thinking on a lot of things-
Foremost, silly me thinking it would be shave ready when I got it, much less 15 years later.
I bought a cheap strap and razor and then some Norton 220/1k & 4k/8k/ stones and used the cheap razor to learn cause I was afear'in.skeered too
I now merely think I am starting to get it..way off from being there-
Only get to use a str8 every 2-3 days at most since when I do it takes a while longer for the need to strike me-
Still a bit of a coward around the chin and throat but the rest I get
real close and sometimes succeed in getting a BBS on the sides 1 out of 4 times. Like anything else, practice and a preparation, the later where I am failing right now- can not get a lather worth a darn with just soap and don't know diddly about cremes-
So glad to be here and learning.

Love your road side signs, "Don't mess with Texas." Kinda says it all. I travel from the tundra to Texas every year to visit some very good friends and have a wonderful time in the big state with the big heart.

Hopefully you didn't come south only to find some north slipped in the way- this has been a pretty cool winter for us- 19 deg. here in central texas where we are used to maybe a few 31's here and there then back up to 75 in the winter. Finally got a little rain, been scarce for 2 years around the highland lakes- Almost full now, crossed fingers it stays that way- darn near out 4 months ago.

From Houston, Welcome Mark! Don't be skeered, but do be respectful of the blade. You'll do just fine, and richmondesi is a great source of advice. Don't be skeered of him, either!!
