Hello!

Hi my name's Aaron A., I shave with a crappy gillette fusion right now but got a straight razor shave this past weekend and fell in love. I used to watch my grandfather shave with one when I was a kid. Now that my birthday is coming up my wife is getting me my own straight razor.
I think I'm going to end up getting a Dovo White Bone Bismarck gift set from Vintage Blades since it's not too terrible on price and it's an amazing looking straight razor. Can anyone recommend a cheap one I can practice with before I go into stropping with the Dovo?

Welcome to SRP. As Aroliver59 suggests, please comb the Wiki for mounds of information for beginners, and if you have questions, please post them.

I have the Dovo "Bismarck" of which you speak and it is a gorgeous razor and a great shave. That is a big blade, and sharp, so keep the pressure low. Most of all, throw the time clock away and concentrate on technique.

hey thanks for all the info. yeah i managed to win this on ebay, i figured i might as well get something cheap so I can just practice stropping and all that. I don't want to mess up that Dovo when I get it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...view=all&tid=0

The Bismarck is a great razor! I have one with the black celluloid scales and its a really great shaver..! :)

Am I right in thinking that you want to practice stropping? If you dont want to spend the extra money on a second razor (by all means do though! "More razors are better!" said the RADdict..! :D), then you can practice stropping with a butter knife. The advantage of this is that you wont slice your strop up with it, whereas you can with a razor. Once you're happy with the motion, then break the razor out and give it a go.
