Cheers from Copenhagen, all!
Hiya, first time poster here!
I've been lurking for a while and like what's being written here on SRP, so it seems just right to join the fun officially!
I've not yet done my first official shave, but have braved putting a razor to my cheek for the first time a few days ago, so while not a complete virgin, I'm still quite the newb.
I've had a couple of straight razor laying around for a number of years now. As a resource, old straight razors are the material of choice within the Danish organbuilding community (church pipe organs, that is) for crafting voicing knives out of. Good steel, so on and so forth. I used the razors I have now for doing leather work, taking good care of the edges and keeping them...well, perhaps not quite razor sharp!
Shaving has always been a chore, a quite expensive one actually, with a four-pack of Gillette Fusion blade costing about 30 USD here in Denmark. The idea of disposable tools also offends, so the idea of using straight razors has been creeping up quite slowly on me over the last few years.
Digging out my old razors, I found a C.V. Heljestrand nr. 24, a Wade and Butcher medium hollow ground, a Putzel from Solingen and a nice little 3/8" from Eriksson and Bjorklund, Eskilstuna (needs rescaling). A nice little set to start out with!
Hones I've got already for my woodworking tools, everything from Japanese artificial waterstones (1200, 4000, 8000), Japanese natural stones from 330mate, Welsh and English slate, Belgian Blue and coticule, Spyderco ceramics....plus a bit more perhaps, but not of the legendary British stones. Got a strop and stropping compound.
Have just spent an enjoyable evening honing three of the razors (medium diamond - fine diamond - aoto - ohira - coticule - strop) and removing all the hair from my right arm at an amazing rate..soon as I get some soap it's time to start for real on my facial hair.
Looking forward to reading more and getting to know you all. Cheers from Copenhagen!!
