Hello from North West England, UK

Hi all,

I thought I had better introduce myself first and say hello to everyone here. My name is Phil and I have been wetshaving for 17 years and have only really taken a keen interest in it for about the past 2 and a half years or so and have had an urge to buy a straight razor for over a year now but have put it off until now. I hope you fellow men can point me in the right directions with some questions I have. Some might seem rather stupid but I need some advice as I am a complete virgin to Str8 razor shaving.

Russ has linked some great resources for you, and both Neil and Steve will be able to help you with the kit you need.

DOVO razors are excellent and I started out with a Black Star 5/8 round point. Its a great little shaver and I use it regularly. I'd also highly recommend the Bismarck as this is also a great razor, and I really like the slightly larger blade (6/8). Steve sells all makes of DOVO razors via his site and they will all come shave ready.

Make sure you give the Wiki a good read as it will really help you on your way, and anything you're not sure about, just ask..!

Thanks for the welcome. Funny you should mention the 'Bismark' as that is the razor I am considering purchasing. I think it looks quite classy and I am pleased someone has positively recommended the 'bis' so early on in my posts.
Suppose I will have to definitely put that down on my Christmas wish list now :)

Don't forget the classifieds, The razors are usually shave ready & you can get a phenomenal deal on many of them. New razors are nice, but often not the best value.

You might also want to consider the Dovo Best.

This is Dovos 'entry' level razor, and is the one I bought when I re-started shaving with a straight.

They are relatively in-expensive, take a good edge, shave well and are very easy to maintain.

Or get both :)

Beware of razor acquisition disorder - resistance is futile :borg:

i`m from yorkshire. Welcome along great to have another britt here.
Don`t worry about asking dumb questions, when you don`t know what your looking for the wikki can be a little confusing and can bombard you with information and be a little confusing.

The best bit of advice i can give you is, Have fun with shaving, There is no right or wrong way to do it, no two people have the same face and so what works for me won`t work for you. Play around with the direction of the strokes the hand you use, and the way you strech you skin.

but most of all enjoy it!

I havent tried the bismark, but i have had one of the dovo best qualitys and it was a great razor.
My hoard has now grown some what and i have a lovely vintage one that is now my first choice razor but the dovo still comes out regularly.

Thanks for the welcome and the information supplied. I think I could quite easily build up a collection of razors once I become competent in the use of one. :)

Just a question I meant to ask, which is the better make: Dovo or Thiers Issard? TI 'Spartacus' razor looks nice too!

Welcome to the forum. I have only been here a couple of weeks myself and it is not only a tremendous source of information, everyone is very helpful and friendly as well. My first razor was a Dovo best 4/8. I have since obtained a Boker King Cutter which I like very much, but I think it is easier using the smaller 4/8 until you get the hang of things. It is smaller and easier to handle when learning. Just my opinion.
