Hello from the snakepit

Hey guys, my name`s Ryan and I live just outside Bath. I`m a big fan of snakes and currently have thirty odd snakes of various sizes in my house. I`m a Goldsmith by trade and have oooooh many hobbies. I`ve finally had enough of spending ten quid on a Mach3 only to still have loads of stubble when I`ve finished shaving. I`ve been thinking about using a straight razor for a long time. I saw some at a market and thought no way, not a chance could I put one of those to my face!! I`ve obviously changed my mind about that though and I`ve bought a straight razor which will arrive soon. It comes with a strop and I`ve bought myself a Badger brush and some nice sandalwood shaving soap from Geo F, Trumper. I`m really looking forward to having a proper decent shave for the first time in my life. I plan to make a ritual of it, to relax and enjoy every bit of it. I`m looking forward to owning a beautiful razor or two and not having any stubble! Heaven.... I`ll be needing a whetstone at some point but I think this razor is shave ready so I`ve got a bit of time to figure out what stone I`ll be needing, maybe you guys can help me out there. Anyway.. Welcome to SRP, Ryan! I highly recommend that you read through all the 'beginner' section of our Knowledge Base if you haven't already. I imagine that if you have the attentive personality and passion for hobbies it takes to keep 30 snakes healthy, and the eye for detail of a gold-smith you will have no troubles at all sticking with a straight razor.

It will take some time to get that ideal shave, but I think you will find that there is satisfaction in the learning itself.

Hey Ryan-Welcome from a grizzled veteran of several weeks on this forum (been lurking for much longer). I too am a snake man. I used to own several, but the wife now says if I bring a snake into the house, we're getting a divorce. I still see quite a few on my fishing and camping trips to the Appalachian Mountains, though. :)

For you and the other Brits on the forum, I'm also something of an Anglophile, since I teach 12th grade British literature at the local high school, and I just plain love all things British (Shakespeare, the Beatles, the Elizabethan Era, Bass Ale, Picadilly Circus, Pink Floyd, Elton and Princess Di, the Wife of Bath-I could go on and on, but you get the idea!).

Happy shaving-I just got a Filarmonica DT 12 and a Tweezerman Badger brush for Father's Day, so I'm having fun playing with those. Take care-Aaron

As recommended, please do the necessary research before you start. That includes watching as many videos as you can find.

Beyond that, skill takes time and patience. Also, part of the pleasure of wet shaving with the straight razor is the ritual. Embrace it.

Welcome to SRP! nice to have you here. I just had my frst straight shave on friday, and it really feels great to make that step into straight razors. Enjoy the ride and have fun and learn as much as you can.

Howdy great to see another Herp lover :) Was in the hobby and buseness for umteen years :p found I was too deep in the hobby to ever be usefull in the industry anylonger so I left the jobs :)
