Hang about! Wasn't King Camp Gillette, the inventor of the safety razor, an American? Wouldn't that make shaving with a Gillette Mach 3 the 'American way'? Wasn't it the case that 'Safety' razors were issued to American troops during World War One and Two and that the British, Australian and New Zealand (probably Germans, Japanese,Turkish etc. too) troops used Cutthroat (straight) razors?...:)
Right, now that I've taken the p!ss, welcome to the forum and I hope you honour your Grand daddy with pride and minimal blood loss :D .

Shave the American way!
With a British razor!
:roflmao
Seriously, welcome to SRP - nice razor you've got there.
I'm no expert, but the razor is definitely pre-1890, and the scales look to be original. So, to answer your question scientifically - they're pretty freakin' old. The decision to rescale is entirely yours.

Welcome to SRP Mike.
You may be surprised how purrty those scales will come up with a bit of TLC.

Welcome Mike,
Personally I think you should try shaving the "Canadian Way" eh! (whatever the hell that might be...lol)
Cheers,

Welcome Mike,
Wade & Butcher razors are good quality. Tell us what hone & strop you have. If you have not honed a razor before then be sure to have it honed by one of our guys first. Trying to hone an old razor that has oxidized steel on the edge is a bit of a challenge. You can find the honing guys in the Classifieds forum.
hope this helps, :)
