Lurker Finally Sign-up!
Good Evening All
My name is Adrian - of Gillette J3 vintage (ie:3rd quarter, 1964) and I have been a cartridge and goop-in-can guy since I began shaving. Two years ago, I switched to DE and now I am in the process of moving to straights.
I have been looking in and lurking, on and off, for a while but now decided to register properly to listen, learn and, hopefully, contribute.
I started with a shave-ready Gold Bug and have since acquired several vintage straights from Ebay. I have learned to hone/sharpen using the minimal tools of a 4k barber hone and a bolsa strop with chromium dioxide...this can give excellent results as long as the razor's edge was in good condition to begin with - that is, no nicks or chips and no need for re-beveling. The razors I have that have damaged edges will be sent to a honemeister in due course.
So, it's a long slow learning curve but it is enjoyable - very enjoyable. The missus thinks I'm crazy and I have had to teach the kids the importance of not touching "daddy's shaving knives" lest there's some serious child bloodshed!

Welcome!!!! I did just the opposite. I have been using str8s and recently purchased a 1959 Fatboy that I have not shaved with yet. I need to get some blades.
Enjoy

Welcome to SRP. It does indeed sound like you've grabbed the bull by the horns and wrestled him to the ground. Get a 1k and an 8k to go with your 4k and take care of the chipped blades yourself. Sounds like you're a hands on guy and could do it. It really is a lot of fun. :tu
