    Hi there

I've been DE shaving fro the past eight months and have recently decided to enter the world of straight shaving. My first straight was a vintage Horstator which I still find very hard to shave with. I feel the blade tugs and skips on my face. I then bought a new Dovo Bismarck which I find a lot better. I've been using this for approx 2 weeks now and my shaves have been getting closer each day. I remember my frustrations and irritations when I started DE shaving so I am encouraged that shaving with a straight will be as enjoyable when I hit the sweet spot. I'm looking forward to reading as many tips and as much advice as I can.

There's a reasonable inference buried here:

. . . The Horstator is not sharp.

"Tugs and skips" is a typical symptom of a dull edge. Since the Dovo works well, your preparation and shaving technique are OK.

Perhaps honing would fix the Horstator; perhaps a few strokes on a pasted strop would be enough.

Thanks Charles I will try and strop it some more. It did come honed from Neil Miller at the strop shop though. I have probably taken some of the edge off it with poor stropping technique before I read up on how to do it!
