Considering getting a straight razor...

Hi everyone at SRP!

Recently been thinking about ditching the mach 3 and take up the art of shaving with a straight razor and was after a little advice :)

Although originally from the UK, Im currently working in Miami and whilst on a walk through the downtown area I came across a local barber shop going by the name of 'Churchills'. they stock a vast array of shaving equipment and, hence this post, a few razors...

These razors include Fromm 5/8'' 72R razors, Mehaz 5/8'' razors and the Dovo shavette...

Any advice on these straights would be greatly appreciated guys! cheers :D

Welcome to SRP! Unhappy with what my Mach 3 was doing to my neck I'm making the transition to straights. If it's something your interested in this is certainly the place to come for information.

I'd suggest you opt for one of the better brands like Dovo, Thiers-Issard, or Boker. Since you're currently in US you can get them pretty easy from retailers like straightrazordesigns, vintageblades, classicshaving.... Make sure you get it honed post factory. And don't forget a quality strop, you need to use it between every two shaves.

BTW the Dovo Shavette isn't really a straight razor - it feels more like a DE razor to me.

Thanks for the advice... I know Boker produce some beautiful knives so one can only assume their straight razors will be of similar quality...

Just checked out Boker's selection of straight razors and fell in love with the stainless steal razor with the olivewood Handle on Straightrazordesigns... an added bonus being that its remarkably cheaper than it is back in the UK!

If you're in the states long enough to order something you might hit up the classifieds here for an affordable razor that you can trust will come sharp and ready to shave. There are strops, soaps, etc. available too.

A new one's good, but it's always good to have and alternate.

See how easy that was . . . can you nudge all the guys that just talk about it for weeks on end.

On the Fromm, you're on your own. If you search this site, you'll find a few references.

New Dovo / Boker / TI razors are reliable, available from many sources. The "Classifieds" on this site contain many good vintage razors, for less than the $80 a new Dovo will cost.

As usual, what you get will depend on your taste and your budget. And don't forget to buy a strop, and a brush if you don't have one.

I really think a good starter set up is a pair of used, shave ready razors so you have two to alternate with and a spare for those new guy errors like dropping or hitting the faucet. I have been lucky to avoid both but its easy enough to do. In looking at the price's you can often get two nice used for the price of one new, get a starter strop or I recommend the SRD paddle strop with the replaceable surfaces. Between the rough side leather and the felt with some diamond paste on it you can keep on sharp a long time before it needs honing.

so been looking through the classifieds section and came across this razor... seems to be in good shape... all advice is welcome, a quick browse through the classified ads with your trained eyes would be greatly appriciated!
