i'm wanting to learn more about straight razors and how to maintain them for my friends and for others with the equipment i have.
as a hobby i make knives and i sharpen them for others but i know straight razors are way different. i have repaired and sharpened a few for friends and they did a good job but maybe i can do better. (please excuse the way i type but i have fibromyalgia and typing is hard enough at times as it is :D)
Richard, welcome to SRP, you will fit in nicely with this bunch. So what are you using now for honing?
i dont use or have a straight razor but i have buddys that do. i used my paper wheels on their razors. i would end up cutting the crap out of myself if i tried to shave with one :D

I do have to tell you that honing straights is a complete different world...your wheels are NOT how to sharpen/hone a razor.
i do know they are different. on occasion i get someone who brings me one that is rusty and in need of cleaning and i want to find out if what i have will suffice. my hands are bad and i had to give up sharpening by hand so i'm stuck with power equipment.Quote:

i do more work on knives than i do on razors but i do get one occasionally. a buddy brought me a razor his dad left him when he passed. it was in real bad shape with rust on the blade and small pits along the edge. i did what i could and took it back. i went to his house the next day and his wife said he was trying the razor out for the first time. normally he shaves with a safety razor and has what his wife calls toilet paper face after from getting cut. this time he came out with a clean shaven face so i must have done something right :D. (i would say the wheel worked ok on that razor)

if you are talking about k II, its not a razor but a knife that i made. nun2sharp watched a vid of me beating the crap out of it on a piece of seasoned ash. i think what i did after i beat the crap out of it the vid amazed him by the way he sounded on the phone.
