You can't hear it in my accent when I talk, but I'm a Welshman in old York

Hi folks!

I wish I'd found this site before I'd invested in my brand new "shave ready" razor! I've just had my third shave with it and I'm a bit sore but no cuts. My problem is I still seem to have hairs on face! All my shave seems to have done is make the hairs extremely short, but they're not quite what you would describe as stubble. Now of course I'm not expecting to master this straight away but am I ultimately going to be getting this due to my razor not being properly honed? Any help greatly appreciated though I have of course been scouring the Wiki almost religously.

DOVO's are great shavers when properly honed, but a lot of sellers don't sell them honed to their full potential.

They come from the factory honed on a grinding wheel and stripped, where's they need to be honed by hand on a series of stones to get the best out of them.

The other thing that will affect the shave is the pre shave prep with the lather and hot towels, and a good stropping. What soap and strop are you using? What do you do for pre shave prep?

If your razor was not shave ready to begin with I'd take Stu up on his generous offer. Not everyone has the benefit of being to close to an experienced member - trust me, if I lived close to Lynn or Glen or the such I would have been over to see them at every chance when I started out.

Also remember that we use stubble reduction, taking off the whiskers in passes. You aren't likely to get a completely smooth shave from a single WTG pass, so the next pass or two (XTG and if necessary ATG) should take care of the rest. Of course this is also dependent on a sharp razor.

Here's my routine:
Strop my razor on my Dovo strop (I have a little experience in this from my knives)
Put my Edwin Jagger Super Badger brush to soak whilst popping in the shower.
Wash my face with Real Shaving Co. facial scrub
Lather up with Trumpers sandalwood soap
Give my face another treatment of a hot towel (technically, a wet flannel)
Do about two/three passes WTG, re-lathering in between
Wash with cold water
Apply Real Shaving Co. Soothing Balm

I have quite sensitive skin, the razor burn from cartridge razors is one of the reasons I've started with a straight. The other being my love of knives!
