Newbie in NorCal Appreciates This Great Resource
Howdy. I'm a newbie from northern California, USA. Some of my other interests (metalworking, knives, guns) led me to a straight razor thread on another forum, which eventually led me here and got me bitten by the straight razor bug.
I couldn't bring myself to jump in with both feet and purchase a good SR to start with, and I couldn't justify the purchase of all the accessories right away, so I decided to learn on a "shavette" style razor with disposable blades. I ended up with a Parker SR1, a cheap bowl/brush/soap set, and a 6pk of styptic pencils (just in case).
It's been about a week. I've learned that styptic pencils burn and disposable blades have sharp corners. I've also found a semi-local shop that had some shaving stuff and purchased a better brush (with a stand), some other soaps to try, and a Maxam SR to practice honing on. I am aware of the Maxam's reputation, but also confident in my ability to work metal from other hobbies and prior college-level study. Besides, if I screw up the Maxam I won't care, and it will keep me occupied while I pinch my pennies for a nice new Dovo.
My next purchases will be a 4000/8000 waterstone and a strop. Probably going to go Fromm on the strop and Newton on the stone. Saving up for the stone now (just bought a house so money's tight).
All-in-all it's been a fairly easy start. I didn't lose much blood on the first couple shaves, although I did get too comfortable this morning and rushed myself making it appear that a cat attacked my neck. Live and learn. Unless you nick the jugular, that is...
