Thanked: 3Hi to all
I am interested in learning how to use a straight edge and while searching on eBay came across a link which directed me here. I liked the approach of the members and after seeing this thread decided to join.
Frankly, I am a little intimidated by the thought of using the straight edge but I want to give it a go. Then God willing master the art!
I would like to purchase a good straight edge and strop or hone but I do not really know where to start, although I have looked at the recommended brands and the brands to stay away from I would prefer some personal help.
Unleash! I am ready to learn.
Peace
Haisam

Thanked: 993Here's my first suggestion:
Wander over to the Classifieds section of SRP. In there you will find a number of shave ready razors at a very reasonable price. That will be step one.

Welcome, ditto on the ebay advice. Stick with known sites like SRP and SRD. The folks here were a tremendous help to me when I got started.

Welcome to the forum,For razors eBay is good once you know what your after.
But there's always a chance you'll buy junk.but there are some good deals to be had.
You have be careful though when the RAD takes hold of there is no turning back.
As for a strop I'm with the others on this I ended up buying 3 because 2 were rubbish
Good luck

Hi Haisam and welcone to SRP.
+1 to all of the above.
It seems that there is a meet-up happening in Sydney in the near future.
It would be a good thing for you to attend, if you can.
I would suggest that you would pick up more good info from that than a month of reading posts - not that reading posts is a bad thing - just it's easier to see how things are done than to read about it and try to interpret it for yourself IME
If you come up to Brisbane post the dates on the 'Down Under' forum and one of us will try and catch up with you - (probably...hehehe)
I hope you enjoy the ride on the learning curve.Hang on and enjoy the ride...

Like everyone else I suggest you stick to known places to buy from. The classifieds here, SRD, other sponsors of this site as well as some of the other reputable shaves sites. I believe there is a thread in the Austraila section right now talking about some retailers local to Austrailia which may shave you some money on shipping as well as there are 2-3 people on here from Austrailia that have great reputations of providing good razors at fair prices.
I would not worry to much about buying a hone at this time. History (take that as my personal mistakes) has shown that learning to Strop and shave are challenging enough at first. Having some stones laying there calling your name the temptation will be to try and fix technique issues with poor honing technique. In the end, not a great result.
Do what ever you can to get to the local meetup mentioned above. I was lucky to get together with MAXI fairly early on and then have a meetup locally soon after that. The learning curve for me was reduced dramaticly with those two strokes of luck.
Enjoy

I'm not sure of the dates etc, Haisam, but if you look in the "Down Under' forum you should get some info there. (I don't know how to post a link to it - sorry)

I lied - it seems that I do know how to post a link - oops
It looks like 03 Sep, Haisam

Haisam,
From one new guy to another, welcome. This site is GREAT! You'll find all the information you want and more.
I couldn't agree more on attending any meet up that you can. You'll learn tons! If that's not possible find some members in your area that you can get together with.
IMHO, I think you can get the best value for your money buying a good used razor on the classifieds here. Listen to everyone's advice on here and buy a "shave ready" one, you'll be very glad you did.
Good luck and enjoy the adventure.
