    Hey all,

A year ago I thought you all were beyond nuts.

My first introduction to modern straight razor shaving was through Robert Williams. Somehow the topic of shaving came up on one of the other forums Robert and I both belong to and I mentioned that I only shaved about twice a week because I get razor burn REALLY bad on my neck. Robert claimed that I would not get that with a straight razor. My first thought was,"Ya right!"

Anyway, a few years later, I finally broke down and decide to try Roberts advice.
My first time around I cut myself a few times on the left side because I didn't believe I would be better off using my left hand for anything but turning the water on. Second time, I switched hands and have not cut myself the last few times. I still have trouble with the area under my nose and under my chin but I'm sure I'll get that figured out with time.

TO his credit Robert was right. I don't have near the problems with razor burn. Its not the closest shave I have ever gotten but it is (much to my surprise) more comfortable on my skin.

Hello Ray, and welcome to SRP

Glad you took the plunge and your shaves are improving. With more practice, not only should your burn reduce, but the shaves should start to approach and eventually exceed the closeness of whatever it was you used before.

Anyway, glad you are here. You are definitely at the right place to gain information and support on straight razors and related paraphernalia!

    James.

    Hey Ray!

Let me just say welcome from a fellow beginner. I'm no stranger to the sensitive skin issue and seeing how I will settle for nothing less than bbs everyday I know how it can be. Trust me when I say this was a god send for me. This place has so much to offer to offer when you're starting out so read read read.
    It'll be worth it.
So I have to ask are you talking about THE Robert Williams the custom razor master?

Yes botomfeeder "The" Robert Williams. That sounds kinda funny.

I first got to know Robert through his traditional archery forum a few years ago. Then he showed up on one of the metal engraving forums I used to moderate. I grew up in my fathers knifemaking shop and in that custom cutlery market. I make my full time living as an engraver in that industry so I probably know many of the knifemakers out there making custom razors like Tim Zowada. I may not know their monikers on here but if I saw their face I probably know them.

That is awesome I very much admire both those gentlemens work. In fact I plan on ordering one from Robert in the near future. I just can't believe with contacts like that it took you this long to give a SR a try. Once again welcome I hope you find this as rewarding as I have.

Welcome! How is using your non-dominate hand working out? I know it is wiser to learn to use it, but that sure scares me! I have been trying to get the feel of it using safety razors with my left hand until my str8t shows up.

Hey a fellow believer. Actually I thought the left hand would be a mistake for me. But the truth is I found it harder to reach across with the right and keep any kind control. I cut myself a few times that first shave because I was afraid my left hand would not be coordinated enough. Once I tried my left I didn't cut myself. After a couple times of using my left it is getting comfortable using it.

That's encouraging! It's best to establish good habits instead of trying to break bad ones, no matter how scary it can be!
