I've been using a DE safety razor for the last few years.

I just inherited my grandfather's straight razors. They're not in shave ready shape, and I decided to see if I like shaving with a straight before embarking on a restoration project.

To that end, I have a "sight unseen" kit on order.

Other than that, I enjoy working with art jewelry. I see a potential hobby in making nice fancy new scales for blades, holders/stands, or cases--you get the idea.

Where in Wisconsin? We had a Straight Razor Meet last spring in Kenosha and might get one going again this spring.

We have a great forum for restoration and workshop stuff. It has a lot of how-to's and also info in the Wiki that you will find useful. Be sure to get a plain leather hanging strop and use it just before each and every shave. Your face will thank you.

It would be easy to overlook the value of those meet-ups at this point. You can learn more in a day at a meet than 6 mo of reading, watching utube, etc. Big welcome. Having an ancestor's blades is pretty special. Kudos for getting a kit & not experimenting/practicing on the special blades. You can practice on other blades. You'll thank yourself. With years on a DE, my bet is that you'll do quite well w/ a str8 and never look back. The str8 will make you really learn your facial topography and the lay of your beard. That by itself will make even your DE shaves WAY better, but not last as long as the str8 shave. 'Sounds like you're about to have some fun.

Pinklather: Yes, I'd hate to ruin them. Plus I figured that a nice properly sharpened razor would be useful to start with. The meet sounds like fun. If it happens in the Spring I hopefully won't be FNG anymore.

I dropped in on the chat last night and based on the advice there I'm now looking for some razors to do some practice work/restores on before I even think about touching my grandpa's.

Lots of irons in the fire with regard to this hobby.
