Take a wicked sharp blade and hold it to your neck?? You nuts?

So started a conversation recently with a friend of mine whom I had just told that I was going to try this old (new) shaving technique. I have had a desire to do this for some time, and as I get older (mid 60's) the urge has gotten stronger. I will be retiring at the end of this year, and after a stress filled and busy career, I have the overwhelming desire to sloooow dowwwwn. Well, every one knows that you don't straight shave with any great rapidity....at least not more than once, I would imagine. That, and a certain nostalgia for a simpler lifestyle. I remember my Dad, and in fact my Grandfather shaving with a straight, and the appeal for that "simpler" time is very strong.
So much for analysis, and yes, I loved my Mom, etc. I have a brand new Dovo 5/8 "Silver Steel" and accoutrements on the way for Christmas, and can't wait. Last thing to do is update insurance, and begin hacking. Ouch, that thought makes my face hurt. Stay close, friends. I'm gonna need a lot of help.

Welcome aboard. I started a couple of years back and a straight is the only way to shave for me. Sounds like you will be sliding into a great shave in the near future.

Don't worry about it. It's one of the safest things you could ever do, because it's completely under your control. Start with easy areas, and if you're ever unsure, just finish up with your disposable until you get comfortable with your straight razor.

It's much safer than driving on the highway, where half the people are either drunk or on the phone. There, you're always seconds away from certain death. But nobody gives that a thought. Remind people of that, if they look at you funny for using a real razor.

What I like best about Str8 shaving is that when you have that wicked sharp blade against your skin, you are not thinking of anything else!!! What could be more relaxing?

BTW: Gulfport was a beautiful place, one of the most beautiful in America, frankly I didnt realize it was still there after Katrina. Here's to the day it is beautiful once again.

Welcome to SRP. I used to stay in Long Beach with my aunt some summers, back in the early '60s, and worked on her son in law's shrimp boat out of Biloxi, when I was 15 years old. Some of the hardest work I ever encountered. Anyway, I remember when I first looked in the mirror and got ready to put that straight razor to my whiskers. I had a bit of 'butterflies' in the stomach but went ahead with it. I took it slow, like Lynn says to do here, and for the first couple of weeks used a DE along with the straight to get the hard spots. My guess is you'll love it if you stick through the learning curve. :gl:

Thanks for the Gulfport comment. Yes, we're still here, and getting better every day. The old mansions are mostly gone; we lost our 1834 grand dame along with many other people, but in many respects, the change has been good. But not to hijack my own thread, I'll say thanks for the encouragement.
