Thanked: 0Hello from VA
Hey everyone. I'm new here and wanted to say hello.
I've been shaving with a DE for a little less than a year and want to learn more about straights. Maybe ease my way into using one. I don't have a lot of money so I'm thinking about searching for a cheapo blade at an antique store or something that I can restore to a usable state.
I don't know much so I'm here to learn, and also looking forward to meeting everyone.

Hi and welcome.
I have not been here long either, every one is really helpful and the wikis are great if you need to learn stuff. If you are looking for cheap then these are good Dovo BLACK Shavette Barbers Straight Razor Germany Green Holder | eBay I started with one similar they are a little easier to use you dont need to get the angle of the blade so accurate, plus they are cheap enough that its affordable to try and give up on if its not for you (I cant imagine anyone ever doing that though!)
Anyway have fun and good luck

Thanked: 275Hi --
I had your idea when I started, and I went down that path. You have _no idea_ how many things can be wrong with an antique-store blade, or what level of skill it takes to fix them (if they're fixable).
I would suggest this, instead, as a low-cost way to get started:
. . . Buy a honed vintage razor and "Poor Man's" strop kit as a "Sight Unseen" kit from Larry at "WhippedDog.com"
There are similar razors on the "Classifieds" section of this website, but you'll have to buy a strop separately.
Then, learn to shave with it.
_Then_, think about honing and restoration.
Charles

Thanked: 0Thanks for the advice and the welcome guys.
I'll certainly check out these options before I grab an antique store blade then
