Law enforcement and fire. I broke down and bought the Dovo shavette from AOS at the galleria in Dallas and promptly cut myself the next morning lol. Still excited though

Greetings from San Antonio. I have been at it since around Christmas and still find I am learning more every day. I made the mistake of buying a cheapie off ebay. Even after upgrading my hones, I still could not get a good shave off of it. I then got a Wade and Butcher and had gssixgun hone it. Then I started really shaving. Also made my own strop and that helped over the cheapie. After experiencing the good razor, I then was able to eventually get to honing adequatly.
If I had to do it over again, I would by one of the DFS shavers from Gemstar customs, or one of the bargains at Whippeddog.com or straight-razors-for-sale.com. There are also a bunch of us here in Texas and you might be able to borrow one to see if you want to commit.
One thing I found that seemed counter-intuitive was that the lighter the touch, the better the shave I get.

Welcome from San Jose. I would recommend finding a cheap razor on the classifieds here. There are some great options.

Thanks again for the welcome. I made my first full shave today WTG did not attempt ATG or XTG. Patchy shave but enjoyable nonetheless. I do have a question regarding the hair on my throat but I will search for an answer first.

Another Texan, cool! I am originally from Houston and only travel back for the fine food and dining (well, those 2x my employer covered said adventure). Welcome! OBTW, screw the shavette and go full straight. You won't regret the decision. :)

Thanks sadly I have bought the shavette for now I am enjoying it this. I feel that this way I can concentrate on learning the shave and relearning the curves of my face without getting lost in the honing and stropping just yet. Think of it as an apprenticeship in straight razor shaving. Or better yet a student of the sword only receives a wooden sword in the beginning but later receives a live blade
