New member intro: LinearOne

Hello my handle is LinearOne and I am happy to say I am joining the world of wet shaving. I have become disgusted by the price of Gilette refills etc and always was interested to know just how straight razors worked. I decided after a few videos from you tube, the posts I read here and other sites that this is something worth a shot. I am in my mid 30's and had been shaved by the barber a couple times now and loved it.

This past Saturday I went to sally's beauty supply and bought a "magic razor", one of those Italian things where you put the half of a DE blade in it. I bought some Williams and a $5 brush from CVS, used an old coffee mug and away I went. I got my face hot with a wet towel, then lathered up (this was surprisingly easy, don't know what all the fuss is against Williams?), and went to work. Was going to try one cheek but I did everything first time without filleting my face! I was quite impressed with the quality of the shave which is undoubtedly superior to any safety razor. I did get some redness/burn on the bottom right side of my neck which I hope will eventually give way. I washed my face after the experience and put on some nivea or neutrogena(cant remember which) after shave balm/moisturizer. Seems OK I guess.

I think my next move will be to get into a cream instead of a soap and perhaps an oil? I dunno.

I'm sure I will get plenty of advice here. Who knows, I may even buy a refinished "real" razor at some point.

Funny how a large percentage come her after getting fed up with the prices they charge for cartridges now. I saw some at the store the other day, and chuckled to myself.

I think the main beef with Williams is the difficult in comparison to other, higher quality soaps and creams.

Feel free to ask away, there is always someone who has been wherever you are.

Creams are awesome! Go for it!

As for the Italian thing you are using! Bro, after you master that and move to a straight... you are going to marvel at how smooth it is!

But he's using a DE blade in a Shavette-style handle, not a "real" straight razor. He just has to change the blade when it gets dull.

great to have you. I saw the sally thing but never actually bought it. I went from a regular razor to a DE to a straight. and if you are worried about the price of a straight razor don't worry. Look on line, look at the classifieds forums, or look at antique shops. Then look around for someone who can hone your razor. I found my Torrey Razor in decent condition at an antique store bought it for $30 bucks, I probably could have found a cheaper one, I got this one in downtown San Antonio so everything in the store was over priced, then I just googled straight razor hone San Antonio and one of the first links sent me to SRP, someone had asked where they can send their hone in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area and some one suggested Ken Rupkalvis in San Antonio. I got in contact with him and He said He would Restore it for 30 dollars. and He also sales strops. $20 dollars for his cheapest. I drove to his house dropped it off picked it up the next day. with you being up north I think for just an extra 5 dollars he will mail it to you. And he guaranteed it for 3 months, if you aren't happy he will hone it again free of charge, and If it needs to be honed with in 6 months it only costs 5 dollars, vs the 15 for first time customers. but the total cost of my set up, not including the soaps and oils and all that, came around 80 dollars. 30 for the razor, 30 to restore it, 20 for the strop. if you look around you can probably find it cheaper than that. and as for soaps brushes and creams, if you want cheap stuff walmart has a set for $10. and you can look online at target or walmart, they sell decent inexpensive stuff. (right now I prefer using the boar from walmart than the badger from AOS). But if you have any questions send me a PM or just strt a new thread in the forum. you'll get answers quick. You will hear the same stuff a lot, but every once in a while you get something different. Hope your travels are smooth.
