First timer in the wet shaving world

Hey guys, and girls. This is my first time getting into straights. I haven't used one yet, but will be ordering a wet shaving kit from SRD on Tuesday.

Reason I'm moving towards straights is I have EXTREMELY sensitive skin, and I have always battled with multi blade disposable razors and always had poor shaves full with razor burn and ingrown hairs like you couldn't imagine. So I'm hoping that with a straight razor and the proper old school technique and shaving equipment I might be able to eliminate the razor bumps and burns.

And besides, nothing in more manly then cutting the hairs of your throat with a super sharp blade :P

This also coincides as my own personal birthday present to myself for my 21st birthday coming up soon.

I'm sure you already know but read up and watch as many you tube videos as you can. I too have sensitive skin and can happily say I'm razor burn and ingrown hair free for the past 6 months with my straights.

A couple key things to remember on technique...VERY light pressure (just enough to remove the lather), keep your angle around 30 degrees, and use short deliberate strokes at first.

I also found the quality of the lather I made was equally important as the above mentioned.

I'd say my learning curve was about two weeks but in that time only suffered from razor burn.

Yes Im mostly concerned with how much pressure I will use, as I'm used to shoving a disposable razor into my face like a snow plough, lol. I am really hoping it will work for me and make the razor burn go away, touch wood.

Welcome and Happy Birthday. You will certainly reduce the amount of ingrown hairs you have trouble with by using a STR8. Just remember there is a learning curve so it will take some time before you get a really nice shave. In the mean time, do some reading and ask questions. SRP is a great community of very knowledgeable and generous folks, so take advantage. Enjoy your journey!

Thanks everyone! I'll be ordering a wet shaving kit from SRD on Tuesday, then an anxious wait for the mail. I've decided on the Dovoebony stainless 5/8 for my first razor.
