New member from Northern Ireland

Really not sure how I ended up considering a straight edge razor but here I am. Just trying to read up a bit more on it. Been using a Gilette Fusion for ages, but not happy with the closeness of the shave (especially on the neck). Always used the sensitive gel, but after reading through the forum, I'm now thinking the red / irritated neck may be the blades and not sensitive skin after all haha.

Lets not forget, who likes handing over almost £10 ($16) for 4 'disposable' blades.

So decided I should try a SE. Was thinking of going to a barber to have a traditional wet shave first, then I have a baseline for myself, but (for the Northern Ireland members) I can only find one place offering it and it's one of those trendy places and I think I'd prefer a proper old style barber. Anyone recommend a place?

I've a few ideas about what I'm after for blade, soap and brush, but not a strop yet.

Been thinking of the following setup:

Dovo Best Quality 5/8

Taylor of Old Bond Street:
Jermyn Street Collection Shaving Bowl & Refill
Pure Badger Shaving Brush

Decided rather than try and learn honing, would just send it to someone who know's what they're at. Also, I shave last thing at night so that I'm not rushing in the mornings, so plenty of time to learn 'the art'.

I'm sure you'll be getting a few queries from me in the near future.

It looks like you have done some valuable research and come up with some intellegent results.
I would agree with you regarding honing - wait until you get the shaving, stropping and face prep down pat before you go down that track. (The voice of experience here)
You may want to chack out the poor mans strop from whippeddog as a starter and make sure you get the razor honed before you begin shaving with it - your face will thank you
Use the search bar at the top right of this page and you'll get a lot of answers to the questions we all had in the beginning.

Welcome to the fold. +1 to Havachat advise, but if you buy from whippeddog be advised that they have a family emergency at present and are unable to hone and strop their razors before sending out.

I too started with the Dovo Best Quality, and you will not regret the purchase. Mine has been a great shaver, and still remains in my rotation. In fact, that's the razor that goes into my shave kit when I travel.

Read the Wiki and ask questions. They guys on this forum are great source of information, and they don't mind sharing. The only dumb question, is the one you don't ask.

welcome, you will really like the jermyn street stuff. I've used soap, cream, after shave balm, AS lotion, and preshave gel. It is my favorite scent of all my stuff. Very clean fresh, but with a old school british feel to it; it will not irritate your skin, the scent kind of had me doubting that, but once you put it on it's very soothing. :hmmm:

Yeah from everything I've read, the jermyn street seems get good reviews from people. As for razor, the alternative to the Dovo that I'd consider is the Boker King Cutter 5/8". I've narrowed it down to these two, can't find any real difference between the two. Though I seem to have to order everything from the US which should make the shipping interesting. Last time I priced something from there, the item was under $10 and the shipping was $70.

Welcome mate. Just reading your last post there. You should be able to source something, if not in Ireland, then in Britain surely?! I've seen some photo's of a gathering held in London at a shaving shop that seemed to have the lot. StuBear organised it. Don't know if he's around anymore, as I haven't seen his posts for some time, but others like Birnando are still around, and I believe he went to that particular 'Razor con'. Perhaps he may be able to help if you PM him.

Yea, there are some (almost) local guys that you could probably tap into to avoid the expensive tariffs...

Then again you guys always have that pot of gold you can get ahold of for extra spending money on those rainboow days.... Thats what me mum told me anyway?.. Not so much?

I know there is the invisible edge in the UK, Rasupur.de out of germany (don't quote me on that), google them and the shipping should be much cheaper. Not sure who the shipping was through for $70, but that's ridiculous. I had a blade shipped here from Japan for $14, try looking for vendors or sellers that use united parcel they are the cheapest, fastest, and most reliable from what I have been told.

I think someone must have hidden my pot of gold, haven't found it yet haha. Nice photo Mick.

Actually I think they are the ones that end up with the gold, if it is anything like over here..
