New member from Ireland

Hi All,

I live in Cork, Ireland and I am basically a complete newbie to this site and to straight razor shaving. I just got my first straight razor for Christmas from my girlfriend. The razor is beautiful, its a Dovo (link to picture: Google Image Result for http://rodolfogrimaldi.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/dovo-en-vogue-tempered-frozen-steel.jpg) and I love ithttp://straightrazorpalace.com/images/icons/icon6.png. She also got me a loom strop from Dovo as well and some green and yellow paste. I have also ordered the Norton waterstone started kit which I unfortunately am already in need of it seemshttp://straightrazorpalace.com/images/icons/icon9.png.

I was stropping the blade and it nicked the leather once or twice (not very hard) and it has put a few microchips in the bevel edge. I am wondering if this is because the blade is defective or its my fault but from what I have read it should not chip so easily. Welcome frome a stateside Ireland descendent! An O'Brien, although I understand it isn't really possible to have this many O'Briens and all really be from Ireland! Good luck with the razor and welcome. It is a beauty! Not sure about the nicks, could be from you or before too. Would recommend not honing your self as this blade seems like one you don't want to mess up. Hey thanks Minnebrew!Thanks for the advice, I may do that. Was also thinking about getting some razors off ebay so I can practice honing without worrying too much about damaging them.

Good idea, I am going to go the same route with practice razors. Also since no one seems to have addressed it, how did you nick the blade? That couldn't have been your strop. Just curious.

I am pretty sure it was the strop. I remember when I opened it for the first time I ran the blade gently across my thumbnail and it was perfectly smooth. Then it got nicked on the strop twice (once by me and once by my girlfriend who wanted to try it). I am guessing this is to be expected as one is learning the correct technique and I don't understand how it broke so easily. I have since stropped on the green paste quite a bit and the chips no longer seem as apparent but they are still visible - although not quite so much in a photo.

I noticed also that the blade is off centre when closing and as a result the tip of the blade is grazing the inside of the scales every time. My girlfriend is going to send an e-mail to the seller in Italy and hopefully they will replace it as I don't think it is acceptable for a brand new and quite expensive razor to be off centre like that.

Welcome Kefka passed through Cork once upon a time, traveling all over the south of Ireland, many of my family came from Cork over 100 years ago so you could say we are 100% Welsh by now.;)
