A little background...my 30th birthday was coming up, I wanted to start acting like a gentleman and get out of some old bad habits. More or less act like a man instead of a kid if that makes any sense; it's somewhat hard to explain in writing. Some friends have laughed at it all but I honestly see a change I dress nicer, respect others even more than before, swear less and feel like I'm a grown up (at 30 this really feels like a minor accomplishment). I started getting into a lot of different things like what to wear for certain events, how to take better care of myself and stumbled on wet shaving.
Fast forward a few months and a little more $ than I thought I would spend and I've made the transition from a cartridge to DE to a Feather SS shavette. I started to think about things I'd like to pass down and for some reason the Feather doesn't really seem to fit in with it all, I can just picture a grandkid or son saying thanks for the plastic handle replaceable blade straight and not feeling like it was something worthy of being an heirloom etc.
I've started to look into getting a traditional straight. I can't see myself using one exclusively but again two months ago I couldn't see myself using the feather without being terrified. Hopefully I can gain a little knowledge and pick up a nice straight in the next few months and be fully converted. The entire reason for going with the Feather was the convenience, I'm currently in the Coast Guard and on a ship so I absolutely needed something that was shave ready with no fuss due to time and environment constraints.
Now to open up a can of worms...where would you suggest finding a reasonable shave ready straight for a good price and has anyone here that's used a Feather before comment on what the closest straight equivalent would be in terms of grind and size...
