Well, I only recently converted to d/e and it only took a few days before I knew I wanted to give a straight razor a try.. The jump from cartridge to d/e was so pronounced for me I was very surprised.
I got a little carried away... Ordered 1 professionally sharpened Dovo, and 2 eBay vintage razors right off... The Dovo will be my razor for both learning to shave as well as a reference for what sharp means. One of the eBay models is supposedly "shave ready"- I guess we'll see. Neither was terribly expensive.
The 2 vintage eBay finds are mostly intended to learn honing on... After watching quite a few videos, posting a couple of questions and reading up a bit, I also ordered some honing supplies; none of which will touch my professionally sharpened Dovo until 1) it really needs it (expecting this to be MONTHS) and 2) I feel confident in the practice that came before on the eBay blades...
My honing kit will consist of:
DMT 8" Coarse 325 for flattening
Naniwa Super Stone 12000
1 x Naniwa Super Stone 3000 & 8000 Grit Combo Stone
Chromium Oxide .5 Micron Spray
15 Carat .5 micron Diamond Spra
And an extra strop w/ 2 felt surfaces for the abrasives...
None of this is in-hand yet; but, I expect my first straight razor shave will be by end of week. And yeah, I predict I'll start with only the flattest area on my dominant side the 1st day!
Why did I have to be 50 years old to figure this out?
Cheers,
